Titanfall 3 was cancelled for Apex Legends admits former Respawn dev (2024)
A former Respawn employee reveals Titanfall 3 was in the works at one point and explains why it was ultimately abandoned.
While Respawn is enjoying the continued success of Apex Legends, as well as its Star Wars Jedi games, there remain fans who are desperate for the studio to put out another Titanfall sequel.
Apparently, a new entry titled Titanfall Legends was in development but was abandoned earlier this year following the departure of its creative director Mohammad Alavi in 2022.
Now, Alavi himself admits that Titanfall 3 was in the works for at least 10 months after the release of Titanfall 2, only for Respawn to drop it in favour of what would become Apex Legends.
Alavi, who worked as a designer on both the previous Titanfall games, reveals in an interview with YouTube channel The Burnettwork that he was going to be the narrative lead on Titanfall 3.
From the sound of things, development on Titanfall 3 was going fine, but Alavi says that while it did feel better than its predecessor, it wasn’t as ‘revolutionary’ as Titanfall 2’s campaign was.
‘I mean, we had, like, new tech for it, we had multiple missions going, we had a first playable [build], which was like, on par to be just as good if not better than whatever we had before, right?’ explains Alavi.
‘But I’ll make this clear – incrementally better, it wasn’t revolutionary. And that’s the kicker, right? And we were, like, feeling pretty decent about it, but not the same feeling as Titanfall 2 where we were making something revolutionary.’
Meanwhile, another team was trying to improve the multiplayer, with Alavi adding that Titanfall 2’s multiplayer mode wasn’t popular enough or something those that enjoyed it would want to keep playing for years.
When PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds launched in 2017, that seemed to inspire the idea of Respawn doing their own battle royale game in the Titanfall universe, which would evolve into Apex Legends.
‘I had just literally become… narrative lead designer on Titanfall 3. I had just pitched the story, the whole game, that me and Manny [Hagopian] had come up with, made this big presentation and then we went off a break and went back from break, and we talked about it, and we were like, “Yeah, we need to pivot. And we need to go make this game”,’ says Alavi.
‘We literally cancelled Titanfall 3 ourselves because we were like, “We can make this game, and it’s going to be Titanfall 2 plus a little bit better, or we can make this thing, which is clearly amazing.”‘
This means publisher EA had nothing to do with the cancellation and it was entirely Respawn’s decision. Although desperate Titanfall fans are likely to be even more disappointed that, for a period, Titanfall 3 did exist.
In the meantime, aside from Apex Legends support, Respawn is busy with two more Star Wars projects – a first person shooter and a strategy game – and some mystery title that the studio has already said is unrelated to Titanfall.

No, it's an entirely new game. It's been confirmed that Respawn is working on an entirely new game that will be set in the Titanfall universe. While it's not the long-awaited Titanfall 3, it's an exciting prospect for fans of Titanfall's unique world and characters.
Despite fan desire, Respawn Entertainment's focus on Apex Legends and other games makes a Titanfall 3 as unlikely as ever. While Titanfall 3's future remains uncertain, a new game involving Titans and set in the same universe could be on the way, and that's exciting.
It's caused by a buffer overflow caused by the name provided by Jeanue's bots. While it's possible to fix the buffer overflow, there's a separate exploit deployed since December 2020 which crashes users even if they have the Little Boy exploit patched.
It was co-developed by Respawn Entertainment and Gravity Well and published by Electronic Arts. Announced on 7 December 2023 at The Game Awards 2023 and released on 11 March 2024 for Microsoft Windows, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and Series S.
Given the game's instability and low player count, Respawn Entertainment announced that they would be ending sales of Titanfall and removing the game from subscription services on March 1, 2022. However, should a player still own the game, the servers will still be available.
Respawn is reportedly working on a new Titanfall game, but it's not Titanfall 3. The people crave Titanfall 3. Unfortunately, that's not coming but allow me to soften the blow. It does appear as if a new game is on the way, set within the Titanfall universe.
BT-7274 is surely alive. In one of the levels (I believe it's Effect and Cause, or a level close to it) BT tells Jack that he uploaded himself into your helmet to communicate with you from long distances. At the end of the credits, you get a short cutscene of Jacks helmet sitting on a deck.
The 6-4 were able to escape Typhon prior to its destruction at the hands of the IMC superweapon. Sometime following the Battle of Typhon, members and lovers Droz and Davis left the 6-4 for presently unknown reasons, forming The Last Resort.

BT becomes incapacitated from damage sustained in his fight with Viper, and the duo are captured by Blisk and his second-in-command, Slone. BT surrenders the Ark to save Cooper but is destroyed by Slone for trying to help Cooper escape.
Earth is a planet within the universe of Titanfall, serving as the birthplace of the known human civilization. During the early 21st Century, Hammond Robotics (then known as Hammond Engineering) rose to prominence on the planet, later going on to form the Interstellar Manufacturing Corporation.
Titanfall developer Respawn is working on a new game in the Titanfall universe, but it's not Titanfall 3, according to a new report. Jeff Grubb of GameSpot sister site Giant Bomb said Titanfall game director Steve f*ckuda is leading a team working on a new game in that universe.
According to former Respawn Entertainment developer Mohammad Alavi, Titanfall 3 was actually a victim of its own success, as the team's devotion to a renewed multiplayer mode ultimately led to part of the game's ideas being spun-off into Apex Legends, Respawn's highly successful multiple battle royale shooter.
Abandoned shortly after release. No updates, no nothing. I'm not really convinced Titanfall was going to be the next big thing. Apex taking out the titans seems to have been a good idea, given that it is far more popular.
No, Apex Legends Mobile is no longer available to play. Apex Legends Mobile was shut down permanently on May 1, 2023. Publisher EA said the reason was due to it falling short of the quality and quantity of content. Players were given roughly 90 days left of play on Android and iOS before the game shut down forever.
Respawn Announces the Plans to Shut Down Apex Legends Mobile
The developer explains that though the game had a strong launch, the planned content pipeline failed to meet EA's expectations. This has resulted in the partner studio, Respawn, and Tencent parting ways, resulting in the shutdown of the title.
The Lore of the Apex universe is connected to the larger Titanfall universe. It is set a few years after the end of the Frontier War, the conflict featured heavily in both Titanfall and Titanfall 2.
Apex Legends is a first-person shooter, as the previous mainline games in the Titanfall series. Unlike the previous games, however, Apex Legends is an ongoing live service game with no single-player campaign or traditional multiplayer matchmaking.
