Paris Christmas Market Mulled Wine

I try to go to Europe every winter to take in the Christmas markets (click here to see all about trips I’ve taken!), which inspired this recipe.

In 2018, it was our second year in a row visiting for Christmas, and it was even more lovely than ever.

While Luke and I were in Paris, we spent much of our time soaking up the wintery sights – Christmas Markets, Chocolatiers who made fancy creations perfect for a Christmas spread, antique shops, over the top stores with crazy displays – it was all such a dream.

We also spent a fair amount of time sitting in quiet cafes, tucking into amazing meals and drinking fabulous wine as we watched people shopping outside, and soaked up tons of art at the Louvre and the D’Orsay – as well as just strolling up and down the banks of the Seine.

We visited the Christmas Market next to the Louvre in the Jardins de Tulleries, which was a magical sprawling space full of amazing gourmet foods like escargot, caviar, oysters, langoustines, champagne, and of course Christmas classics like Vin Chaud, chestnuts, gingerbread, candies, and tons of spiced cakes.

It was an intoxicatingly whimsical Christmas Market – I hope I can take my kids there next year for more festive fun. They asked to go to London and Paris for our family trips this year (I was pretty shocked that won out over Disneyland… but I am not complaining!!), and I can’t wait until we get to take them there.

You can’t beat Christmastime in Paris – it is just one of the most magical places on earth.I am so sad we can’t travel to Europe to be with our family there for Christmas this year, but are hoping and praying we can next year!

Red Wine Mulled Wine

The great thing about this simple mulled wine is that it is a great mulled wine base. You can easily take this recipe and build on it to make it your own – feel free to add in lots of different fruits, herbs, spices, liquors, and juices to find a blend you love.

To make your own custom Red Wine Mulled Wine, try some of these tips:

-For every bottle of red wine, add ½ cup brandy, whiskey, or bourbon to the large pot.

-Use 1 cup of sugar – but that can be granulated sugar or a sugary juice.

-Add fresh herbs like rosemary for a twist.

-Slice apples thin and add them to the pot.

-Throw in a handful of ripe berries.

-Use Aspen Mulling spices in place of spices and sugar.

-Bring to a quick boil and then immediately reduce heat. No matter your ingredients, you want them to just boil then keep them simmering for warm wine that lasts all night long.

How to Serve Hot Wine

This Vin Chaud recipe is gorgeous for parties – it is so easy and delicious, but it is also really pretty and can make for a perfect custom co*cktail.

I serve mulled red wine in easy to hold mugs or cups (make sure you don’t use something that will burn guests hands while holding the hot liquid), and I like to top them off with an orange slice or a twist of orange peel, a couple fresh cranberries, and a cinnamon stick in each cup when serving for a party – it just seems prettier and more fun. You could also serve each with a star anise if desired.

When serving this hot wine at home, my husband and I just make a pot and keep it slowly simmering on the stove throughout the night (which makes the house sound fantastic) and hang a ladle off the side of the pot so we can top ourselves up a bit whenever we need.

This mulled wine is perfect for a cozy night in, or a big festive party!

Slow Cooker Spiced Wine

This Vin Chaud is perfect for dinner parties, after skiing or sledding, and even fancy events. To make this Vin Chaud in a slow cooker for easy serving and displaying, please follow the tips below:

To make this Vin Chaud in a slow cooker, combine all ingredients, stirring to dissolve any sugar you may have added.

Place the lid on the slow cooker and turn to high – cook until piping hot, and then set slow cooker to low to keep your wine served warm throughout the night.

FAQs

What is the difference between gluhwein and vin chaud? ›

In the Netherlands, Glühwein is called bisschopswijn (bishop's wine) and is made using oranges instead of lemons. Order Vin chaud (hot wine), a less sweet variety when in France. Bulgaria likes to add honey, peppercorns and apples and call it greyano vino (heated wine).

What is vin chaud made of? ›

- Easy to make!

In this vin chaud recipe, I add brown sugar, winter spices, lemon peel, and orange slices to a fruity red wine. The mixture is heated, strained, and then served with a twist of orange zest (if you're fancy). That's it!

What is the tradition of mulled wine? ›

It was first popular along the Romans, who would drink hot spiced wine in the winter. As the Roman Empire spread across Europe, so did its partiality for hot red wine. People added different herbs and spices for sweetness, to make bad quality wine taste better, and because they believed in their health benefits.

How long to cook off alcohol in mulled wine? ›

Does the alcohol cook out when making mulled wine? In short, yes, some of the alcohol burns off when boiling mulled wine, but you should only be gently bringing up to the boil and simmering for around 15-30 minutes which isn't enough time to completely remove all alcohol traces.

What is the best wine for Glühwein? ›

Zinfandels, Merlots, Syrah/Shiraz, or Garnache tend to work best. Avoid red wines high in tannins or have an oaky flavor, and avoid light reds. Sometimes Cabernet Sauvignon, which tends to have a full-bodied, fruity flavor, can work in a pinch, as can Malbec, which tends to have a bold, spicy flavor.

Is Merlot or Pinot Noir better for mulled wine? ›

Ideally you want to use bigger and bolder red wines like Zinfandel, Merlot, Syrah, or Cabernet, but any fruity red wine your family members are leaving around will do. I've used Pinot Noir before to success. Honestly, whatever red wine that you're stuck with and you don't want to drink, they'll work.

Which country drinks the most mulled wine? ›

This drink is consumed enormously in Scandinavian countries, particularly in Sweden and Denmark, where it is called Glögg and Gløgg respectively (terms meaning "mulled wine" in each language). In Germany, as in most Germanic countries, it is mainly consumed under the name Glühwein.

Is mulled wine good or bad for you? ›

When combined with cinnamon in particular, mulled wine becomes a powerhouse of goodness. Let us explain… Cinnamon, a key spice in mulled wine, is renowned for its antioxidant properties. It contains high levels of polyphenols, which help combat oxidative stress, reducing the risk of chronic diseases.

What do Americans call mulled wine? ›

A heady brew of red wine, brandy, aromatic fruits and spices will keep everyone warm during your holiday festivities. It goes by many names: spiced wine, glögg, glühwein, vin chaud. Whatever you call it, mulled wine is one of the world's most classic punch recipes.

Can you drink mulled wine straight from the bottle? ›

Yes. Even though the spiced wine is heated, most of the alcohol remains. I suppose you could make a batch of mulled wine with a non-alcoholic wine and that would not have alcohol.

Why is mulled wine so cheap? ›

The reason they are cheaper than a bottle of red wine is because there is far less red wine in them! If you read the (very) small print on the label of Lidl's Christkindl Gluhwein, it is described as a "Flavoured beverage containing wine".

Does heating mulled wine reduce the alcohol content? ›

The heat used in mulling encourages greater flavours from the citrus and the spices but also reduces the alcohol content, hence the common addition of a slug of spirit or liqueur just before serving.

How do you heat mulled wine without losing alcohol? ›

Warm your wine gently to allow the spices to infuse – and to avoid boiling off the alcohol. You want to serve it at a drinkable temperature – not take the roof off an unsuspecting guest's mouth!

How many times can you reheat mulled wine? ›

You can reheat mulled wine as many times as you like, as long as it hasn't been overheated. Always use a thermometer to keep an eye on the temperature. If you plan to use your leftover mulled wine at a later date, keep it in the fridge for up to three days.

Are Glogg and Glühwein the same? ›

Different versions of mulled wine in different countries

In Scandinavian countries this drink is known as gløgg and it often includes aquavit, cardamom (if you use the black kind it gives a lovely smoky taste) and dried fruit. The German version is glühwein (or 'glowing' wine) and that includes schnapps.

What is the difference between Glühwein and vin brulé? ›

Good vin brulé always has brandy added at the end. Glühwein usually has the option to add rum or another liquor. I love the brandy option, but usually add about half a shot to keep the wine as the primary flavor.

What is another name for Glühwein? ›

Mulled wine, also known as spiced wine, is an alcoholic drink usually made with red wine, along with various mulling spices and sometimes raisins, served hot or warm.

What does Glühwein in German mean? ›

This mulled wine recipe is for the German Glühwein, which literally translates to glow-wine, because of how you feel after you've been drinking tiny mugs outside in December.
