UK Drone Laws & Flying Regulations | Drones Direct (2024)

We all know how fun and addictive it is to fly drones, especially when the sun is shining and you just want to get out there and fly. Before you do though you need to make sure that you are flying safely and abiding by the drone laws.

FORALL PILOTS

All pilots flying any drone which weighs more than 250g needs to register
with the CAA from November 30th 2019.

FOR HOBBY FLYING

Hobby flying is quite straight forward but there are regulations that you need to consider before taking flight.

• You must fly responsibly and avoid any wreckless or negligent activity.
• It is against the law to fly above 120m (400ft).
• Never fly in an airport's flight restriction zone. (more info)
• You should fly no further than 500M.
• You must maintain line of sight of your drone at all times. This is so that you can see and avoid other things when flying.
• Do not fly within 50M of any buildings, vehicles or people who are not under your control, and avoid flying overhead people.
• Avoid flying within 150M of crowds of over 1000 people.
• Please don't fly on private land without permission from the owner.

FOR COMMERCIAL FLYING

Commercial flying can be a much more restrictive environment as your drone needs to be registered and permits to fly need to be issued from the CAA.

• All of the rules and laws as stated in 'Hobby Flying' above, must be followed unless permission has been given from the CAA.
• You will need to obtain valid insurance for your drone and for any operational activity.
• Any drone flights conducted on behalf of a business, for financial gain or any other form of benefit requires a CAA Permission for Commercial Operation.
• You must fly responsibly and avoid any wreckless or negligent activity.
