How private is Google Messages? ›

Your 1:1 and group chat messages with other Google Messages users are private and encrypted end-to-end by default. When you message someone who also has RCS chats turned on in Google Messages, your chat conversations automatically upgrade to end-to-end encryption.

With RCS enabled, your chats are protected by end-to-end encryption. So you can share whatever you need to.

When you send messages and attachments, including photos, videos, or audios in Chat, your content is stored securely in our world-class data centers. Data is encrypted in-transit and at-rest. If you choose to access these files offline, we may store this info on your device.

We've created tools like Dashboard and My Activity, which make it easy to view data saved in your Google Account. There are also powerful privacy settings like Activity Controls, which let you choose what activity data gets saved in your Google Account.
