Understanding Supplemental Security Income SSI Benefits -- 2024 Edition

SUPPLEMENTAL SECURITY INCOME (SSI) BENEFITS

Generally, the maximum Federal SSI benefit amount changes yearly.SSI benefits increased in 2024 because there was an increase in the Consumer Price Index from the third quarter of 2022 to the third quarter of 2023. Effective January 1, 2024 the Federal benefit rate is $943 for an individual and $1,415 for a couple.

Some States supplement the Federal SSI benefit with additional payments.This makes the total SSI benefit levels higher in those States. SSI benefit amounts and State supplemental payment amounts vary based upon your income, living arrangements, and other factors.

The following States or territories do not pay a supplement to people who receive SSI:

The SSI Program is a federally funded program which provides income support to eligible individuals who are aged 65 or older, blind or disabled. SSI benefits are also available to qualified blind or disabled children. The SSP Program is the state program which augments SSI.

The payment amount is first calculated according to the person's income and living arrangements. It is then prorated. We reduce the base SSI payment by 1/3 if a person or couple is living in another person's home and getting food and shelter from that person.
