Dr. Aran Nayebi, an assistant professor at CMU, jokes about his robot vacuum having a bigger brain than his cats, but it's his virtual zebrafish that's making waves in the AI community. Nayebi and his team were inspired by the natural curiosity of animals and aimed to create an AI agent that could explore its environment independently.
"If we build AI scientists, we could make those moments of serendipity in scientific discovery more likely," Nayebi explains. And this is the part most people miss: AI agents, unlike humans, don't carry the same biases, making them potentially better at uncovering hidden patterns in complex datasets.
The virtual zebrafish, with its animal-like brain activity, provides a glimpse into the future of AI-driven exploration. But how did they do it?
Nayebi and his team built upon prior research into glial cells in zebrafish brains. When biologists discovered that these cells play a crucial role in the fish's ability to swim and explore, it opened up a new world of possibilities.
"When we severed the zebrafish's ability to use its tail, it entered a state of futility-induced passivity," Nayebi says. "It tried, realized it couldn't, and then stopped moving. But after some time, it tried again, and that's where the glial cells came into play."
Using this knowledge, the team developed a computational method called Model-Memory-Mismatch Progress (3M-Progress). This model allows the AI agent to explore and adapt without external guidance. The memory component is key: it stores both real-time experiences and prior knowledge of how the world should work. When a new sensory experience doesn't match the prior memory, the model updates itself.
Reece Keller, a PhD student involved in the study, emphasizes, "Animal intelligence is built on top of lots of biological priors. Our research shows that incorporating memory primitives gives just enough flexibility to construct an intrinsic goal that captures zebrafish exploration behavior."
3M-Progress is an intrinsic-motivation algorithm, giving the AI agent its own drive to explore. Unlike a robot vacuum, which is reward-based, the virtual zebrafish isn't just searching for new stimuli. Instead, it's pushed towards meaningful, curiosity-like exploration.
"We're not trying to force its 'brain' to match the data directly," Nayebi clarifies. "We created a simulated environment, let it explore, and then evaluated its behavior."
And the results? The virtual zebrafish exhibited behavior similar to futility-induced passivity, even without prior knowledge of the state. This is a significant step towards understanding and recreating animal-like autonomy in AI agents.
"The neural glial connection is how biology computes the mismatch between lived experience and expectations," Nayebi explains. "Our simulated zebrafish learned to realize its actions were futile and then suppressed them, just like the real fish."
This research opens up a world of possibilities. Nayebi and his team are now exploring how autonomy can be applied across different embodiments, not just zebrafish.
