Use Google Assistant to type with your voice (2024)

Important: The text you speak stays on your device and isn’t sent to Google servers except when you use the “Fix it” feature.

You can dictate text through your voice with Assistant voice typing on Gboard.

  • Punctuation is automatically added as you speak.
  • You can type on your keyboard even if the mic is still on.

On Pixel 8+ and coming soon to Pixel 7, if you use multiple languages, Assistant voice typing can now automatically detect your spoken language seamlessly.

  • In the new “Language tag,” you can find the language detected as you speak.
  • To manually switch languages, switch to the relevant language keyboard.

Tip: When you use the Google Assistant typing mic, language tag displays the language you speak.

What you need

To use Assistant voice typing, you must have:

  • A Pixel 6 orlater, including Fold
  • Android 12 or later
  • Google Assistant turned on

Turn Assistant voice typing on or off

  1. On your phone or tablet, open any app that you can type with, like Messages or Gmail.
  2. Tap where you can enter text.
  3. At the top of the keyboard, tap Settings Use Google Assistant to type with your voice (1) Use Google Assistant to type with your voice (2) Voice typing.
  4. Turn Assistant voice typing on or off.

Tip: Based on words you've corrected in Gboard, Assistant voice typing improves just for you. You can change your voice typing personalization at any time.

Use voice commands

Important: Assistant voice typing is on by default unless you use multiple languages on your device. You can turn Assistant voice typing off at any time.

  1. To activate Assistant voice typing, open any app that you can type with and tap on the Keyboard mic Use Google Assistant to type with your voice (3).
    • To keep the microphone on and send multiple messages in a row: Double tap Keyboard mic Use Google Assistant to type with your voice (4).
    • To turn the microphone off: Tap Keyboard mic Use Google Assistant to type with your voice (5), close the keyboard, or say "Stop."
  2. Say the text you want to type. If your microphone is still on, the microphone icon continues to glow.
  3. Say a command. For example:
    • To delete the last word: Say "Delete last word."
    • To delete the last sentence: Say "Clear."
    • To clear the text: Say "Clear all."
    • To send a message: Say "Send."
    • To fill out the next open field in a form: Say "Next."
    • To add an emoji: Say the name of the emoji, like "Smiley emoji."
    • To stop voice typing: Say "Stop."

Tip: To find more voice commands, while you speak, tap Info Use Google Assistant to type with your voice (6).

Use Fix it

Important: If you’re using "Fix it" for the first time, in the pop-up, tap Continue. You can use "Fix it" on most apps.

Eligibility requirements:

  • Pixel 8 or 8 Pro
  • English only
  • United States
  • Network connectivity

You can check and correct any typed, pasted, or voice dictated text in your text box for writing errors like typos, grammar, and punctuation.

  1. On your device, open the app where you'll input your text.
  2. Tap on the Keyboard mic Use Google Assistant to type with your voice (7).
  3. Say the text that you want to type.
  4. To apply corrections to your text, say “Fix it” or tap on the suggestion that's shown when an error is detected.
  5. If more proofreading suggestions are available, say or tap More fixes to see additional suggestions.
    • “More fixes” is shown after you say or tap Fix it.
  6. Optional: To remove the correction, say or tap Undo.

Use multiple languages with Assistant voice typing

  1. Turn Assistant voice typing on. Learn how to turn Assistant voice typing on.
  2. To switch languages, on your keyboard, tap Globe Use Google Assistant to type with your voice (8). Learn how to add a language to your keyboard.
  3. Tap Keyboard mic Use Google Assistant to type with your voice (9).

Tips:

  • English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish are supported by Assistant voice typing.
  • For supported locales, voice typing is on by default, and you can switch between languages automatically. The language you’re speaking will be detected by Assistant.

Edit text with voice commands

  1. If Assistant misheard a word, tap on the word to select it.
  2. To correct a misheard word, speak, type, or spell out a correction, or tap one of the suggested alternatives.

Turn off automated punctuation

  1. On your phone or tablet,open any app that you can type with, like Messages or Gmail.
  2. Tap where you can enter text.
  3. At the top of the keyboard, tap Settings Use Google Assistant to type with your voice (10) Use Google Assistant to type with your voice (11) Voice typing.
  4. Turn off Auto punctuation.

Manage voice typing personalization

  1. On your phone or tablet, open any app that you can type with, like Messages or Gmail.
  2. Tap where you can enter text.
  3. At the top of the keyboard, tap Settings Use Google Assistant to type with your voice (12) Use Google Assistant to type with your voice (13) Privacy.
  4. Under "Improve Gboard & voice typing," turn Personalize for you on or off.
    • When turned on, transcripts of what you say and type will be saved on this device. You can delete them at any time on your keyboard when you tap Settings Use Google Assistant to type with your voice (14) Use Google Assistant to type with your voice (15) Privacy Use Google Assistant to type with your voice (16) Delete learned words & data.

Tip: Changes you make to dictated text may be used to improve Assistant voice typing for your use.

Fix issues with Assistant voice typing on Gboard

Try these solutions if you can’t turn Assistant voice typing on.

You've set up your new Pixel, but Assistant voice typing still isn't available

In some cases, it can take a few hours for your phone to download the necessary updates before Assistant voice typing works. If voice typing still doesn't work:

  • Make sure your phone is connected to Wi-Fi.
  • Restart your phone.
  • Charge your phone overnight.

Assistant voice typing needs an update. Connect to Wi-Fi to automatically download.

Turn on & connect

  1. Open your device's Settings app.
  2. Tap Network & internet Use Google Assistant to type with your voice (17) Internet.
  3. Tap a listed network. Networks that require a password have a lock icon Use Google Assistant to type with your voice (18).

Assistant voice typing isn't available in your current Gboard language.

For supported locales, voice typing is on by default, and you can switch between languages automatically. The language you’re speaking will be detected by Assistant.

Switch languages on Gboard

Important: You might need to add a language to Gboard first.

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open any app that you can type with, like Gmail or Keep.
  2. Tap where you can enter text.
  3. Touch and hold the space bar to switch languages.

Switch languages on your device

  1. On your Android device, tap Settings Use Google Assistant to type with your voice (19).
  2. Tap System Use Google Assistant to type with your voice (20) Languages & input Use Google Assistant to type with your voice (21) Languages.
    • If you can’t find "System," then under "Personal," tap Languages & input Use Google Assistant to type with your voice (22) Languages.​
  3. Tap Add a language Use Google Assistant to type with your voice (23) and choose the language that you want to use.
  4. Drag your language to the top of the list.

To use Assistant voice typing, update your Android System Intelligence app on Google Play.
