Valentine's Day Fortune Cookies (1)

Valentine's Day Fortune Cookies

A cookie that was similar to the fortune cook has been around since the 19th century. The first recorded instance was during Japan's Kyoto era when batters were made with sesame and miso rather than vanilla butter; these cookies differ from their American counterparts quite a bit too-they're larger, darker doughy mass. They contain a fortune; however, the paper was wedged into the bend of the cookie, not inside the hollow portion.

red, add just a couple drops to another bowl to make them pink, and the last bowl you can leave plan. Put a few spoons full of some of the red dough in a piping bag or sandwich bag do the same with a few spoons of pink dough. Cut a tiny hole in the bottom and use it to pipe out hearts onto your cookies.

Valentine's Day Fortune Cookies (6)

Use the back of the spoon to spread out the cookie dough into a very thin circle. If it’s too thick, the cookie will be chewier and not crispy. I would start with two cookies at a time so you have time to get the hang of making the fold. Then you can make them four at a time, I found any more than four would harden faster than I could make them.

Use the piping bag with red dough to carefully pipe hearts onto some of your dough. I made some of the cookies plan with red hearts and some red with pink hearts.

Bake your cookies for 4-6 minutes (different ovens will vary with time) until brown around the edges. Add the fortune to the middle of the cookie.

Valentine's Day Fortune Cookies (9)

Use a spatula to quickly remove the cookie from the baking sheet. To form the fortune cookie shape, fold the cookie in half, then pull the edges downward over the rim of your bowl like in the above photo. Remember to work quickly before your cookie hardness.
