VERIFY: Does aluminum foil protect your key fob from thieves? (2024)

It's no secret that when the temperature drops, car thefts rise. So tonight, we verify a claim going around about the best way to protect your key fob.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - It's no secret that when the temperature drops, car thefts rise. So tonight, we verify a claim going around about the best way to protect your key fob.

You may have heard that the best way to protect your key fob overnight is putting it in a tin coffee can. An article is making the rounds on the internet stating that aluminum foil can protect your car key fob from getting hacked.

The article says foil blocks the electromagnetic waves your key fob emits, which would allow the hacker to get in or out of the car, but is it that true?

To verify, we went to Tom Scott, executive director of SCCyber, to ask: Does wrapping your key fob in aluminum foil fully protect your fob from getting hacked?

"Simply having tin foil wrapped around your key fob will not protect you from somebody trying to steal the codes off that," he said. "Your key fob in tin foil or aluminum foil, it may dampen the signal depending upon how close you are, but it won't completely eliminate it."

So we've verified that this claim is mostly false. That's because there isn't enough density in aluminum foil to fully protect the fob from being hacked.

If you do want to protect your key fob from amplified signals overnight, the best and cheapest way- is to stick it in the fridge. The multiple layers of metal will block the fob's signal. Just check with the manufacturer to make sure the cold won't damage it.
