I’m mad for a greenhouse, just not for the work. Wish I enjoyed that more! The Roosevelt greenhouse is undergoing renovations and will take most of a year to complete. Looking forward to seeing the progress. But nothing is sweeter than your first two. Thanks for the pingback! Jane

I too love a greenhouse. The first one is my favorite. (Although I wouldn’t want to throw any dirt around in there.) I’m adding another one that would work beautifully attached to a house. (Hopefully mine, someday.)

The Roosevelt estate is phenomenal. I love the kitchen…

I love the first one! Hope to have something similar, maybe not two stories though, lol. I’d probably call it a potting shed, but really set the potting supplies up outside and use it as an art studio/ lounge… after I win the lottery 🤞
And yes, I used your read from the beginning link, so I’m reading from the beginning!

I am so going to have a greenhouse one day!

I have fallen into the Alice-in-Wonderland hole that is your blog today and the hour I needed to spend making hypertufa pots for the garden club plant sale in 3 weeks has been consumed.

Loved reading all about your house and life! I am currently in a high rise in the DC area, but we spend our summers in the circa 1830 farm in NW New Jersey, where my husband grew up. One day we hope to live there full time. In the meantime, we have had the 1830’s bank barn rebuilt, restored, enlarged, and deer-fenced the vegetable garden, and are working on restoring the perennial gardens. Since my MIL still lives there 9 months of the year, our next big project is to renovate the guest house so that we can have a space to call our own for now.
I love seeing all you have done. You and Joan of For the Love of a House are my heroes!

    I’ll be back another day!
    Catherine

PS I have a blog spot, but I am too intimidated to actually post much!

Right before reading your comment, I was scoping out a FREE greenhouse on Craigslist!! It’s GIANT. And two hours away in Delaware… and probably is long gone, given the way free stuff doesn’t last… but I was excited for about 30 seconds! I’ll be surprised if the guy emails me back…

I was bummed you didn’t link your name to your blog… but then, kind of glad since an 1830’s farm would make me cry with envy… I have some kind of old-house fetish. (Clearly you do too.) And it’s combined with the dream that at some point I will live somewhere where I cannot see ANY of my neighbors. (We’ll probably have to move to Iowa to afford it…)

      So nice to “meet” you!!!!

As someone who refers to seed catalogues as “plant p*rn” I want each greenhouse you posted above. I don’t have one here, yet.

Victoria, I sent you a message on Facebook about using one your photos here on a blog post about recycled material construction. I hope it’s ok. I gave you credit and linked back to your page here. Please let me know if it’s not ok and I will remove it.
    Thanks again 🙂

Until now I hadn’t thought we needed a potting shed/greenhouse. But having just read the post above and seen all those wonderful examples I think we do need one. We are planning on changing the backyard to a more Victorian garden and one of those examples would fit in very well. I’ll add it to our project list.

    FAQs

Are potting sheds worth it? ›

Designed to enjoy an abundance of natural light, a potting shed provides the ideal temperature for growing plants, particularly those that aren't quite ready to brave the outdoors. What's more, is there a better place to keep your pots, trays, tools, soil and seeds than in the exact place where they're needed?

What is the difference between a potting shed and a greenhouse? ›

The main difference between a greenhouse and a potting shed is the building materials. A greenhouse is made mainly of glass or polycarbonate glazing (ie. plastic). Whereas a potting shed is usually made of timber with some glass windows, to give you some natural light in the building.

How big should a potting shed be? ›

A 6′ x 8′ shed is often the perfect size for a potting shed, used for potting, transplanting and propagating your plants. If you enjoy gardening or simply need a handy space that you can get dirty and store your gardening supplies in, then a 6′ x 6′ or 6′ x 8′ she shed is definitely a good size.

What is a potting shed? ›

A potting shed is also a structure used to store and grow plants, however, it does not have fully transparent walls and roofing, instead, just a few windows to allow some sunlight in. A potting shed is great for growing plants as well as storing equipment.

Where is the best place to put a potting shed? ›

The sun should be your main consideration. Since many wooden potting sheds have glazing on one side, you need to position your windows to face south. This will allow your plants and seedlings the most sun exposure throughout the day. You should also look to put your potting shed up against a wall or fence.

Should a greenhouse have a dirt floor? ›

If growing directly in the soil, your greenhouse won't have a floor. You can use pavers, flagstone, gravel or wood planks to create walkways if needed. Not finishing the floor of a greenhouse and planting directly into the soil offers several benefits for greenhouse growers.

What is the best orientation for a potting shed? ›

Planning where you're new potting shed is going to sit is something that needs careful consideration. For the shed to function well for plant growth the windows will ideally need to be south facing so that they let in a good amount of light and heat.

Can you put a shed on soil? ›

Soil is also not a solid material for anchoring, and will not be a secure way to ensure your shed does not move. Some sheds, such as our Shire range, can be purchased with a pressure treated timber base, of which is suitable for grass.

Do sheds need a floor? ›

A shed will need a floor or base, depending on the type of shed and how “floor” is defined. There is the base or foundation type of floor and the floor on which you will store your items. The floor and base can be the same, or they can be two separate things. If a shed is over 300-500lbs, it should have a foundation.

Can a shed sit on dirt? ›

While you can place your shed (with or without a floor) on bare dirt, we highly recommend first laying down a gravel pad. The gravel will add a layer of moisture protection between your new structure and the ground so that water from rain and snow won't turn your shed site into a muddy mess.

What is the life expectancy of a glass greenhouse? ›

Glass is expensive to purchase and install and requires special supports to hold the glass panels in place and support their weight. However, glass has a long life span, usually exceeding 25 years. Most commercial greenhouses no longer use glass as a glazing because of the high weight and cost.

Are premade sheds worth it? ›

Prefab Sheds Save Time & Provide Peace of Mind.

Plus, your shed will last longer and is less likely to have structural defects. It's the ultimate choice for those who value their time but still want a quality outdoor space.

Are DIY sheds worth it? ›

Building your own shed vs buying a shed depends entirely on your preferences, budget, and circ*mstances. If you enjoy DIY projects and value customization, building one yourself could be right for you; otherwise if convenience, time-saving, and professional quality are important then pre-built could be the best option.

Do sheds decrease home value? ›

However, most appraisers would say that a shed's value would only be around 1% – 2% of the property's overall value if your shed is a basic storage shed—-not much more than its depreciated value. A shed adds practical value to a property. A storage shed for tools will be perfect if a potential buyer loves gardening.
