Is Crystal Palace Park worth visiting? ›

Crystal Palace has so much to offer as it boasts independent shops, exciting new eateries and a Victorian park full of life-size dinosaur sculptures. Transport links into Central London are excellent with London Bridge and Victoria National Rail stations just under 30 minutes away by train.

Unfortunately access to the Crystal Palace Museum is via a steep flight of stairs and is not suitable for wheelchair access. Weekday school visits are always welcome at the Crystal Palace Museum. The Museum can accommodate up to 35 children per visit.

The Crystal Palace of London was a structure erected to host the Great Exhibition in 1851. With walls held together with iron and plate-glass, creating the illusion of a palace made of glittering crystal, the appropriately named "Crystal Palace" was the home to the Great Exhibition beginning in 1851.

The Crystal Palace itself was destroyed by fire in 1936. This was followed by a period of dereliction and decay at the park. Although soon after there followed a number of plans for rebuilding the Palace and redeveloping the park, none were fully implemented.

The Crystal Palace, designed by Sir Joseph Paxton, was a remarkable construction of prefabricated parts. It consisted of an intricate network of slender iron rods sustaining walls of clear glass.

Crystal Palace Tour

An intimate and expertly guided walking tour, of 12 people or less, through almost two miles of highly decorated cave passages. The tour takes approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes and leaves from the gift shop. There are 360 stair steps and you go to a depth of 155 ft. below the surface.

There were rumours of arson at the time, but this appears unlikely. It was probably an electrical fault or cigarette end in the office area of the building. The palace – which was erected at Hyde Park in 1851 before being moved to Sydenham Hill, south London – had been patched up extensively down the years with wood.

Why are they called Crystal Palace? ›

The annual fixture stoked up plenty of local demand for football, and so a professional Crystal Palace club side was formed in 1905. The team and park are, of course, named after the great glass structure that housed the 1851 Great Exhibition in Hyde Park, which later moved to the slopes of Sydenham.

The Palace was destroyed by fire on 30 November 1936 and the site of the building and its grounds is now known as Crystal Palace Park.
