Walmart Credit Card Review

4.5 / 5

The Capital One Walmart Rewards® Mastercard® is a good credit card for people who frequently shop at Walmart, especially Walmart.com. The Walmart Card’s rewards rates range from 1% to 5% back, depending on the type of purchase made. Cardholders earn 5% back on Walmart purchases made online or through the Walmart mobile app, even those later picked up at a Walmart store location. Normally, in-store purchases get you just 2% back – same as purchases made at Walmart and Murphy USA gas stations. But, new cardholders can get 5% back on in-store purchases for the first 12 months by paying with Walmart Pay.

There are other reasonsother than Walmart rewardsto consider the Walmart Credit Card, too. The card also gives 2% back on travel and dining at restaurants, along with 1% back on all other purchases. The card does not charge an annual fee, either.

Walmart Credit Card Review Highlights

$0 annual fee

Credit cards tied to major retailers typically have noannual fees, so this isn’t unique. But it still saves cardholders nearly $22.22 per year compared to the average credit card overall.

Walmart Pay bonus

New cardholders who link their Walmart credit card account to Walmart Pay can earn 5% back on in-store purchases for the first 12 months by using Walmart Pay at checkout.

Better rewards online

Cardholders earn 5% back on purchases made on Walmart.com or through the Walmart mobile app. That rate applies to purchases you have delivered to your home as well as those you pick up at a Walmart location. However, in-store purchases made with the Walmart Rewards Card for some reason only merit 2% back – at least after the first-year promotion ends.

Gas rewards are good, but stations are limited

The Walmart Credit Card gives you 2% back on gas purchases, which isn’t too shabby. But that rate only applies when you fill up at Murphy USA or Walmart gas stations. And some states don’t have any locations.

New rewards for restaurants and travel

The Walmart Credit Card now gives 2% back on travel expenses and dining at restaurants. That makes the Walmart card competitive with some of the best rewards credit cards around – at least in terms of ongoing rewards in those two categories.

Fair credit recommended for non-Walmart purchases

The Walmart Mastercard requires fair or better credit for approval. If you have lower credit, you’re more likely to be eligible for the Walmart Store Card, which can only be used at Walmart, Walmart.com, and Murphy USA/Walmart gas stations.

Several ways to redeem rewards

Walmart Credit Card users can pay for Walmart purchases with rewards at the register. Cardholders can also redeem their rewards for account credits, gift cards, airfare, hotel stays or rental car reservations.

Calling is probably the better option if you're in a hurry because activating your card online requires creating an account first. But both methods aren't too hard to do and don't take all that much time. The same methods apply to the Walmart® Store Card, too.

What's Your Rating?

I am writing to express my extreme dissatisfaction with the unclear and misleading information regarding fees and interest charges on this type of account, and hope to inform others.

In 2023, I utilized a cash advance feature and was charged a separate interest rate for this transaction in addition to the standard APR applied to other purchases. I was explicitly informed by a customer service representative that paying my entire account balance would eliminate the cash advance interest charges. Subsequently, I obtained a loan to settle the nearly $3,000 balance in full, resulting in a zero balance.

Despite having no outstanding balance or additional cash advances since then, I have been charged cash advance interest fees in June and this month. When I contacted customer service this week, I was told that because I paid the balance before the statement closing date and made a subsequent small purchase, a balance existed, necessitating continued cash advance interest charges until the entire balance is paid off again.

This cyclical situation is unacceptable and has eroded my trust in the company. I intend to pay off the remaining balance as soon as possible and terminate my account.

Unbelievably bad experience! I opened my card in February of 2011. I would only make small purchases, such as dog food, and pay it off completely each month. I never had any issues until this morning. Today, I opened the app only to see that although my payment was received, my account is restricted! Completely dumbfounded, I called and spoke with a representative, hoping to find out why there was a restriction and to request that it please be lifted. The representative immediately began reading a script and claimed that I was in violation of my contract. I tried to ask how I was in violation, but the representative just repeated the same script, never giving me a reason. At the end of the script, I was at a loss for words and requested proof of this violation. The representative said they do not provide that and if I would like to apply for a new account, I may do so, and then abruptly disconnected the call. This whole interaction was very frustrating, to say the least. The representative's behavior was unacceptable and extremely unprofessional. This one instance made the last decade of my loyalty non-existent. As a God-fearing person, I cannot state how I truly feel, but I will say that this was a horrible and truly embarrassing experience. Shame on you, Capital One.

After I paid off a significant portion of my debt, they lowered my credit limit to the point where I could no longer use it. I will pay off the rest of the debt and cancel the card. They've permanently lost a customer. Their customer service is the worst; I have other cards and experience no issues with them or their service. The Walmart Rewards MasterCard, on the other hand, is terrible. I can't wait to never deal with them again. They wouldn't even work with me on this issue. I'm even considering boycotting the entire franchise. Do not get this card; save yourself the trouble.

The credit card is good, but their communication is sorely lacking! You get rewards, but they have to be used in $5.00 increments. If you buy something for, let's say $30.00, it takes forever to make a purchase using the rewards. When I tried to do it after three $5.00 increments, it told me the balance was unknown... ridiculous! My biggest issue is getting ahold of them. I am having trouble making my payment, and I got an email from the collections department with a "limited time offer" to work with me on my bill this month. The email gave me a phone number to call and accept my offer 1-888-331-6133. So, the first thing I do (a few days ago) is call to accept. Well, the people who answer my call tell me they can't accept my offer. I have to call the collections department 1-888-553-1355. So, I instantly call the number and a recording comes on saying that the number has been disconnected (yes, I called the correct number; I've double and triple-checked). After five tries, I call the first number back. She has no idea why this is happening. She gave me the correct number. She can't transfer my call to them. I try calling from another phone. This time I connect, but then, right after the recording tells me it's transferring my call, I get a beep and the recording tells me my call didn't go through. This morning I tried to call the infamous collections department and got the recording that the number is disconnected. Now I have to go to work. It's disgusting communication, especially for it being 2024. Why does the email lie by giving me the completely wrong phone number to call to accept? What's with the game of the call never going through to the collections department? Are they going to claim I missed the deadline for the "limited time offer" after trying for three days? Why all the games, Walmart Rewards? One good thing I can say is getting ahold of someone at the 1-888-331-6133. I guess because they can't really help with anything, so they're not hard to reach.

Love my Walmart card! It has great rewards, and everyone uses Walmart, so why not? Capital One gave me a very generous limit with a low score of 570 at the time. Now my score is in the mid-600s. Capital One gives you the second chance we all deserve. Payments post quickly; there's no waiting or worrying. It's a hassle-free card and my go-to card for everyday use for rewards. Thank you, Capital One.
