Walmart and Capital One have announced the end of their partnership, which made Capital One the exclusive issuer of Walmart’s consumer credit cards. The Capital One Walmart Rewards Credit Card Program launched in 2019. The partnership became strained after Walmart accused Capital One of customer service shortcomings, including delays in updating cardholder accounts and replacing lost cards.
The dispute led to a lawsuit filed in April 2023. Capital One disputed Walmart’s right to termination. In March 2024, however, a New York judge ruled that Walmart could end the partnership due to what she said were Capital One’s “repeated customer service failures.”
What Does It Mean for You?
While the partnership officially ended with the announcement on May 24, there are no immediate changes for cardholders. Until further notice, anyone with a Capital One Walmart Rewards® Mastercard®* can continue to use their card wherever Mastercard is accepted, including for Walmart purchases. Cardholders can continue earning and redeeming rewards, and any rewards already earned will retain their value.
A Capital One spokesperson confirmed to Forbes Advisor that it plans to convert existing eligible Walmart Card customers to one of Capital One’s flagship rewards products. The companies issued a joint statement saying, “Additional information will be provided in the coming months to Walmart credit card holders.”
