WAN settings - Google Nest Help (2024)

Wide area network (WAN) settings let you control how Google Nest Wifi and Google Wificonnectto the Internet. The type of WAN connection that you have is usually determined by your Internet Service Provider (ISP).Check with your ISP if you have questions about which settings to use.

In WAN settings, you can view your WAN IPaddress and configure settings using one of the connection methods below:

  • DHCP
  • StaticIP
  • PPPoE

Change WAN settings

To change your WAN settings, Nest Wifi or Google Wifi must be offline and your mobile phone must be connected to your Nest Wifi orGoogle Wifi network. To do this, disconnect the Ethernet cable from your router or primary Wifi pointand wait until the light pulses yellow for Google Nest Wifi or pulses orange for Google Wifi. Make sure that your mobile device is still connected to yourNest Wifi or Google Wifi network.

  1. Open the Google Home appWAN settings - Google Nest Help (1).
  2. Tap Favourites WAN settings - Google Nest Help (2)WAN settings - Google Nest Help (3)WifiWAN settings - Google Nest Help (4)WAN settings - Google Nest Help (5)SettingsWAN settings - Google Nest Help (6)WAN settings - Google Nest Help (7)Advanced networking.
  3. Tap WAN.
  4. Choose DHCP, Static or PPPoE.
  5. Make any changes, then tap SaveWAN settings - Google Nest Help (8).

DHCP

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is the protocol that allows a device (in this case your router) to automatically get an IPaddress and other related information.

If you had another WAN type and want to go back to DHCP:

  1. Open the Google Home appWAN settings - Google Nest Help (9).
  2. Tap Favourites WAN settings - Google Nest Help (10)WAN settings - Google Nest Help (11)WifiWAN settings - Google Nest Help (12)WAN settings - Google Nest Help (13)SettingsWAN settings - Google Nest Help (14)WAN settings - Google Nest Help (15)Advanced networking.
  3. Tap WAN.
  4. Choose DHCP.
  5. Tap SaveWAN settings - Google Nest Help (16).

Learn more about DHCP

Every device connected to the Internet has an IPaddress. It tells the Internet where to send data, like a postal address on a package.

When you use DHCP, your Nest Wifi router or Google Wifi primary Wifi point will automatically ask the device connected to its WAN port, usually a modem, for an IPaddress. Your modem gives your router or primary Wifi point an IPaddress for a set amount of time. This is called a lease time. When the lease expires, the modem will renew the lease and the router or primary Wifi pointwill typically use the same address. DHCP will assign a new IPaddress to your router or primary Wifi point after a reboot.

DHCP is often the defaultused by ISPs because the process is automatic and requires no manual configuration.

StaticIP

A static IPaddress is an IPaddress that has been specifically reserved for your connection and doesn't change automatically. You'll know if you have a staticIPbecause you'll have reserved an address with your ISP.

  1. Open the Google Home appWAN settings - Google Nest Help (17).
  2. Tap Favourites WAN settings - Google Nest Help (18)WAN settings - Google Nest Help (19)WifiWAN settings - Google Nest Help (20)WAN settings - Google Nest Help (21)SettingsWAN settings - Google Nest Help (22)WAN settings - Google Nest Help (23)Advanced networking.
  3. Tap WAN.
  4. ChooseStaticIP.
  5. Enter the IPaddress, subnet mask and Internet gateway provided by your ISP. When you've finished, tap SaveWAN settings - Google Nest Help (24).
  6. After the changes are saved, reconnect the Ethernet cable to your router or primary Wifi point and modem.

Learn more about staticIP

Most users don't need static IPaddresses for their router. You'll only need one when you want an external device or Internet service to remember your device. Examples would be,if you're running a server or want to remotely access your home network via its publicIP. Most ISPs require a special account, often intended for businesses, to assign you a static IPaddress.

This is different from your personal device having a static IPaddress. Your router can have a static IPaddress that appears to the rest of the Internet. But individual devices connected to your router, such as a laptop, smartphone or tablet, can also be given static IPaddresses that are used for your local network. These specific static IPaddresses won't be shown in the outside world. Learn more about staticIPs for your network devices.

PPPoE

PPPoE is short for Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet. This means that you need a specific username and password from your ISPbefore accessing the Internet. This is typical for many DSL connections.

If you're not sure what your username and password are, contact your ISP and ask for your PPPoE account name and password. You'll need to enter these when manually configuring your WAN settings.

Once you have your account name and password, here's how to enter your PPPoE information.

  1. Open the Google Home appWAN settings - Google Nest Help (25).
  2. Tap Favourites WAN settings - Google Nest Help (26)WAN settings - Google Nest Help (27)WifiWAN settings - Google Nest Help (28)WAN settings - Google Nest Help (29)SettingsWAN settings - Google Nest Help (30)WAN settings - Google Nest Help (31)Advanced networking.
  3. Tap WAN.
  4. Choose PPPoE.
  5. Enter your account name and password. Verify the password, then tap SaveWAN settings - Google Nest Help (32).
  6. Reconnect the Ethernet cable to your Wifi point.

Note: To keep your network secure, Google Wifi and Google Nest Wifi donot support Web Proxy Auto-Discovery (WPAD) Protocol. WPAD can easily be hacked and expose your browsing behaviour or data. If your device has WPAD enabled, we recommend that you refer to your device user manual to disable it.
