FAQs
Dividend is the number or quantity being divided. Divisor is the number by which we divide the dividend. Quotient is the answer to the division problem. It is the number which we get by dividing a number.
What is the divisor and the dividend? ›
The dividend is the number that is being divided. The number that is doing the dividing is the divisor. The quotient is the answer to a division problem, or the number of times the divisor goes into the dividend evenly. The remainder is what is left over, if anything, after dividing.
What is the order of the dividend and the divisor? ›
Step 1: Arrange the dividend and the divisor in the descending order of their exponents. Step 2: Find the first term of the quotient by dividing the highest degree term of the dividend by the highest degree term of the divisor.
What is the formula between the divisor and the dividend? ›
Dividend = Divisor x Quotient + Remainder. It is just the reverse process of division. In the example above we first divided the dividend by divisor and subtracted the multiple with the dividend.
How to remember dividend and divisor? ›
The shorter word, “divisor” is always on the outside of the bracket trying to get in. The larger number, “dividend” is inside waiting to be divided. More math memory ideas can be found in my Memory Tips for Math book.
What is a dividend in 5th grade math? ›
In a division problem, the number that is to be divided or distributed into a certain number of equal parts is called the dividend. As in the example above, when we are dividing 20 apples into 5 people, the dividend is the number 20; and the number 5 is called the divisor.
What is a dividend example? ›
What Is an Example of a Dividend? If a company's board of directors decides to issue an annual 5% dividend per share, and the company's shares are worth $100, the dividend is $5. If the dividends are issued every quarter, each distribution is $1.25.
How to find divisor? ›
We can find a divisor of any division problem by either of the following formulas:
- Divisor = Dividend ÷ Quotient.
- If there is a remainder which is not a zero, divisor = (Dividend – Remainder) ÷ Quotient.
How are the divisor and dividend labeled? ›
The number that is being divided (in this case, 15) is called the dividend, and the number that it is being divided by (in this case, 3) is called the divisor. The result of the division is the quotient. Notice how you can always switch the divisor and quotient and still have a true equation: 15 ÷ 3 = 5.
How do you find the missing dividend or divisor? ›
To find an unknown dividend, multiply the quotient by the divisor. To find an unknown divisor or quotient, find a related multiplication fact where the dividend is the product. The third number in the related multiplication fact is the missing number in the division equation.
Steps to Solving Word Problems
- Answer the question that is being asked.
- Understand what's being divided. This - the number that is being divided - is called the dividend.
- Understand how the dividend will be divided. In other words, how many equal pieces will the dividend be made into? This number is called the divisor.
Which is greater, divisor or dividend? ›
The top number is our dividend and the bottom is the divisor.
What is an example of a divisor and a dividend? ›
In 22 ÷ 2 = 11, 22 is the dividend, 2 is the divisor and 11 is the quotient. If, 45/5 = 9, then 5 is the divisor of 45, which divides number 45 into 9 equal parts. 1 ÷ 2 = 0.5, the divisor 2 divides the number 1 into fraction.
Does each mean divide or multiply? ›
The key word that designates multiplication or division is "each". "Each" indicates that the groups being combined or split up need to be equal in size. Other words like "total", "area", "in all", and "altogether" can designate multiplication or division.
What is the divisor and dividend factor? ›
Dividend is the number or quantity being divided. Divisor is the number by which we divide the dividend. Quotient is the answer to the division problem. It is the number which we get by dividing a number.
What is a divisor of 48? ›
The divisors of 48 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 16, 24, and 48.
How to find the divisor? ›
We can find a divisor of any division problem by either of the following formulas:
- Divisor = Dividend ÷ Quotient.
- If there is a remainder which is not a zero, divisor = (Dividend – Remainder) ÷ Quotient.
Is the divisor on top or bottom? ›
The number on the left will always be the dividend, and the number on the right is the divisor. Where you normally read division problems from left to right, here you read from top to bottom. 12 divided by 2. The top number is our dividend and the bottom is the divisor.
Which is the quotient? ›
Definition of Quotient
The number we obtain when we divide one number by another is the quotient. For example, in 8 ÷ 4 = 2; here, the result of the division is 2, so it is the quotient. 8 is the dividend and 4 is the divisor. Note that the quotient and the divisor are always smaller than their dividend.
