Sensitive compartmented information (SCI) is a type of United States classified information concerning or derived from sensitive intelligence sources, methods, or analytical processes. All SCI must be handled within formal access control systems established by the Director of National Intelligence.

The TSA predominantly grants Public Trust and Secret Clearances, with only a few positions requiring Top Secret. In contrast, agencies like the CIA and NSA often necessitate Top Secret Clearances or higher, such as Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) access.
Information "above Top Secret," a phrase used by the media, means either Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) or Special Access Program (SAP). It is not truly "above" Top Secret, since there is no clearance higher than Top Secret.
National Security clearances range from confidential, which is the easiest to attain, to Secret, Top Secret, and SCI, which is the most challenging. Public Trust clearances are either low, moderate, or high risk, and Non-sensitive are the least extensive, requiring only criminal background and credit checks.
Confidential level is the easiest to obtain. disclosure of secret information could be expected to cause serious damage to national security. The secret level is reinvestigated every ten years and may have some amount of military involve- ment in the clearance process.
For a Top Secret security clearance, the background investigation includes additional record checks which can verify citizenship for the applicant and family members, verification of birth, education, employment history, and military history.

The average Transportation Security Officer does not obtain a security clearance, but will fill out an SF-85P and obtain a position of public trust. For management positions and above, a Secret clearance or higher level of eligibility is typically required, which requires completing the SF-86.
Tier 5 (Former SSBI or Level 3) – critical sensitive national security position. This investigation makes the staff member eligible for a top-secret clearance. Tier 5+ (Formerly level 4) – a select designation for staff needing TS/SCI security clearances. Only a very select few positions are within this scope.
Q clearance is a type of security clearance offered by the United States Department of Energy. It is functionally similar to the Top Secret clearance granted in other areas—and can generally be used as such—but also provides access authorization to restricted data and special nuclear material.
SCI classifications are only cleared for a few people and the background investigation process as well as the continual monitoring is extremely intensive. The amount of time it takes to receive a security clearance is usually between six months to one year, if all goes well.
A Top Secret, or “TS”, clearance, is often given as the result of a Single Scope Background Investigation, or SSBI. Top Secret clearances, in general, afford one access to data that affects national security, counter-terrorism/counter-intelligence, or other highly sensitive data.
You can check your security clearance status using several online portals. The Joint Personnel Adjudication System (JPAS) and the Defense Information System for Security (DISS) are primary portals. By accessing JPAS or DISS, you will see your current status, clearance level, and expiration date.
Level 6, or Cosmic Top Secret (CTS), clearance is exclusively granted to the Administrator and the O5 Council. This clearance grants knowledge to anything that the Foundation has information on.
