SSI, which stands for Supplemental Security Income, is a program administered by Social Security. It provides monthly benefits to individuals who have limited income and resources and meet certain criteria.
These criteria include being blind, aged 65 or older, or having a qualifying disability. Children with disabilities or blindness may also be eligible for SSI.
While some individuals eligible for SSI may also be entitled to Social Security benefits, c. Social Security benefits are based on individuals who have worked and paid Social Security taxes, making them "insured." In contrast, SSI benefits are not tied to prior work or the work history of family members.
Funding for SSI comes from the general funds of the U.S. Treasury, including personal income taxes and other taxes, while Social Security benefits are financed through Social Security taxes.
Medical assistance
Additionally, many SSI recipients in most states can also receive medical assistance (Medicaid) to help cover healthcare costs. Some states provide a supplemental payment to certain SSI recipients, and in some cases, an application for SSI may also serve as an application for food assistance.
SSI benefits are paid on the first day of the month. To be eligible for SSI, individuals must be disabled, blind, or at least 65 years old, and they must have limited income and resources. They must also meet specific citizenship or noncitizen requirements, reside in certain locations, and not be absent from the U.S. for an extended period.
"The medical standards for disability are generally the same in both programs for individuals age 18 or older," reads the Social Security official website.
"For children from birth to the attainment of age 18 there is a separate definition of disability under SSI. The medical standard is based on the severity of your disability; financial need is not considered at this step in the eligibility process."
Both SSI and Social Security benefits provide monthly payments, but the medical standards for determining disability differ slightly for adults and children. The Social Security Administration (SSA) administers both programs.
