What kind of insurance do I need when applying for a visa for the Netherlands? | NetherlandsWorldwide (2024)

Attention: If you are a seafarer, or have a diplomatic passport, you do not have to show proof of insurance with your visa application.

Insurance requirements

When you apply for a Schengen visa you must show proof of insurance, such as the first page of your insurance policy (policy schedule). The document must show that:

  • you are covered by the policy
  • the insurance provides cover in all the countries of the Schengen area for the entire duration of your stay
  • the insurance covers at least €30,000 in medical expenses for:
    • hospital admission and treatment
    • emergency treatment
    • prescription medicine
    • repatriation to your country of residence (including in the event of death).

If you already have health insurance or travel insurance that covers medical expenses, check whether it meets these requirements. Also check whether your policy schedule includes the required information before you apply for a Schengen visa.

If your insurer cannot issue proof of insurance bearing your name and containing the other required information, take out insurance with another insurer.

Taking out insurance

If you don’t have travel medical insurance or your policy doesn’t meet the requirements, you can find an insurer online by searching for ‘Schengen visa health insurance’.

If there is no insurer that offers Schengen visa insurance in your country of residence, you can take out insurance in another country. If you have a sponsor in the Netherlands, you can ask them to take out insurance for you in the Netherlands.

Some insurers will refund all or part of your insurance premium to you if your visa application is denied.

Bring proof of insurance with you

When travelling to the Netherlands on a Schengen visa, you must be able to show proof that your insurance is valid for the entire duration of your stay in the Schengen area.

If you have a multiple-entry visa and it is not your first trip to the Schengen area on this visa, you must be able to show proof of insurance for every subsequent stay in the Schengen area.
