One of the most important things to do when creating custom keyboard shortcuts for Windows is to document what the shortcuts are. While the user can still open a program by clicking on an icon or searching for it, it’s still helpful to know how to access the different programs with the keyboard. I recommend writing the shortcuts down in a document and storing it in an easy-to-find location, or printing it and hanging it near the computer. This information isn’t sensitive like a password, so don’t worry if other people see it.

Depending on your distribution and desktop environment, the steps may vary slightly, but the general idea is the same. Open the Settings, and click on Keyboard. For Linux:1. Different Linux desktop environments may have varying methods for creating custom keyboard shortcuts. In many cases, you can navigate to the system settings or control center and look for the keyboard settings section.2. Once there, you can typically add custom shortcuts by specifying the command or action and then assigning a key combination to it.Keep in mind that some applications may have their own built-in methods for creating custom keyboard shortcuts, so it's worth checking the settings within the specific app as well.

Keyboard shortcuts are useful, but there is a limit to their functionality, assuming the most common procedures for creating them using what comes packaged with the Operating System (OS) whether Mac, Windows, or Linux. That being said, it's possible to greatly extend this functionality by utilizing the Terminal (Mac & Linux) or Command Line (Windows). These tools, common to all computers and every OS, make it possible to express the actions we want to do on a computer with text commands. Once we know the commands for the actions we want to execute, we can arrange them one after another in a text document called a script, which we can then run using the command line or terminal. We can even run these scripts using keyboard shortcuts.

- Consider the functions you use most frequently, and prioritize creating shortcuts for these.- Try to choose keys that are easy to reach and remember.- Avoid overriding default shortcuts unless absolutely necessary.- Make sure the shortcut keys are not already assigned to another function.- Consistency is key. Use similar shortcuts for similar actions across different applications when possible.- Test your shortcuts to ensure they function as expected before relying on them.
