One of my favorite fall activities is going to an orchard and coming home with a bag full of fresh apples, a gallon of cider, and maybe some pumpkins. Apple picking is such an essential fall activity. I’m glad to be living on the east coast again, since there are so many apple orchards. Recently I was getting ready to head to Wilkens Fruit & Fir Farm with my girlfriends. As I was running around throwing clothes all over the room, I decided I needed to put together a post about what to wear apple picking.
Apple picking is such a classic fall activity but can be surprisingly difficult to dress for. You need to account for the terrain and the temperature, while also looking very “FALL”. When you’re deciding what to wear apple picking, you’ll definitely want to consider an outfit that’s comfortable. There’s nothing more embarrassing than being that girl dressed entirely inappropriately. Some things that make up a good apple picking outfit include durable boots, denim, and anything plaid.
When you decide what to wear apple picking, make sure you’re taking the weather and conditions of the orchard into account. You don’t want to ruin new boots if it’s muddy from rain the previous day. You also don’t want to be wearing something that’s either too hot or too chilly for the temperature.

Plaid
You cannot go wrong with plaid for apple picking. It’s the perfect fall print. Just make sure what you’re wearing is appropriate for the activity. I love a plaid skirt as much as the next girl, but you’ll absolutely look out of place if you wear one apple picking. Stick to items like flannels and shackets to channel the right apple picking energy.
Denim or corduroy
These two fabrics are great for apple picking. They’re both durable and warm enough for an outdoorsy activity. These fabrics work well as both pants and jackets, so get creative.
T-shirts or turtlenecks
Depending on the weather you’ve got, a t-shirt or turtleneck is a great layering piece for your fall look. I went recently with girlfriends while the weather was fairly mild, so I wore a t-shirt and layered a plaid flannel when I got chilly. Now that temps have dropped, I’d absolutely pair a turtleneck beneath a shacket.
Quilted jackets
If it’s colder when you go apple picking, highly recommend a quilted jacket. They’re still very much on trend and will keep you warm while out in the orchards.
Durable boots
As tempting as it is to pull out your cute new booties, apple picking is not the time. It’s going to be grassy at the least and muddy at the most. Rubber or lug sole boots are my favorite, but something of the hiking variety will work nicely too.
