How do you answer a disability determination question? ›

The alleged onset date, or AOD, is the date you claim on your Social Security Disability application you became unable to work because of your medical condition. The onset date may or may not be the same as the date your medical condition was diagnosed or your injury occurred. A typical AOD is the date last worked.

Generally, there is a 5-month waiting period and we'll pay your 1st benefit the 6th full month after the date we find your disability began.

Period of Disability means a period of time during which you are Totally Disabled from one or more causes.

When telling Social Security about your daily activities, avoid general statements like "I get up, shower, get dressed, eat breakfast, go outside to read, eat lunch, etc." These can give the impression that your days are typical and without difficulty.

Your alleged onset date is often the date you stopped working due to your disabling impairments. However, it is important to note that these alleged onset dates are not set in stone. They can be changed by a judge or by your own motion to amend.
