FAQs
Physical Damage or Wear and Tear
Stun guns can experience wear and tear over time, affecting their performance.
Can a taser fail? ›
Tasers failing to deploy properly are “very rare” because each weapon is tested before it's shipped to a customer, the company said. Suspects' drug use might also play a role when Tasers do not subdue targets, some research suggests.
How long is a Taser effective? ›
An electric Taser can incapacitate someone for as long as its electrical cycle lasts, typically around 5 seconds. People usually recover immediately and feel no residual side effects, but it's important to keep an eye on them afterward to make sure that there was no injury for at least 20 minutes afterward.
What is the life expectancy of a Taser? ›
TASER pulse cartridges have a service life of five years.
Why won't my TASER spark? ›
While the red light will still come on if the batteries are not inserted properly, there is not enough power for the stun gun. Double-check that you have the polarity of the batteries (+/-) matched.
Do Tasers expire? ›
If the battery pack is left out for an extended period of time, the software in the ECD may be damaged and the date/time may be reset. Refer to the online troubleshooting guide at www.axon.com. Check expiration of TASER cartridges (5-year expiration date is listed on the base of the cartridge).
Why are Tasers sometimes ineffective? ›
Some people have tugged the metal probes from their bodies, rendering the device useless. Mental illness or drug use can also influence how a person reacts to the shock. Sometimes the fault lies with officers who don't use them properly. LAPD officials are also exploring whether a new Taser model was a factor.
How many times can a Taser be fired without reloading? ›
Many Taser models can shoot only one pair of darts before changing the firing cartridge that clips to the front of the weapon, but some can hold two or even three cartridges, allowing for more shots before reloading. The X2 model, shown here, holds two cartridges, so it can fire two sets of darts without reloading.
Do Tasers work through clothes? ›
The BEST parts of the body to attack with this kind of taser is the chest & neck area but anywhere on the body you can get it against bare skin or through light weight clothing (think t-shirt thickness) and hold it for a couple/three seconds is better than nothing.
What is the success rate of tasers? ›
It analyzed 1,201 field uses of TASER energy weapons at 6 law enforcement agencies, and found that 99.75% resulted in safe outcomes, demonstrating that TASER weapons “can be safely substituted for more injurious intermediate force or lethal force options.”
They deliver a modulated electric current designed to disrupt voluntary control of muscles, causing "neuromuscular incapacitation." The effects of a TASER device may only be localized pain or strong involuntary long muscle contractions, based on the mode of use, connectivity and location of the darts.
Do Tasers leave permanent damage? ›
A: TASER energy weapons are designed to temporarily incapacitate a subject only as long as the electrical cycle . . . meaning the subject can recover immediately and most feel no residual side-effects. There are no known long-term effects from being exposed to a TASER energy weapon.
What does getting tased feel like? ›
Your whole body is violently shaking. and all of your muscles are cramping. You hear them count down, and then it just throws you back. and you're just shaking and it's like, extremely painful.
What's the difference between a stun gun and a Taser? ›
Stun guns are close proximity devices that require you to be next to the person attacking you. They use a painful shock to discourage further contact. On the other hand, a TASER uses projectile prongs that attach to a target further away—up to 15 feet.
How long does the shock of a Taser last? ›
The electrical pulses from a Taser strike last only five seconds. After that, most people return to their normal muscle function right away. "Recovery from the incapacitation is instantaneous," Nguyen said.
What is the cause of death of TASERs? ›
In 16 cases coroners and other officials stated that a Taser was a secondary or contributory factor of death. In dozens of cases, coroners cited excited delirium as cause of death. Excited delirium has been questioned as a medical diagnosis. Several deaths occurred as a result of injuries sustained in struggles.
What is the life of a Taser battery? ›
Non-rechargeable battery packs have a useful life of approximately 500 single-bay discharges.
