There are many people out there that say that Coolmath Games.com, a website that hosts education games, will soon be shutting down. Coolmath Games is a website that kids use to play games when their bored in class. Teachers often let them because it keeps kids quiet. This website is more or less the website students go to escape the mind numbing boring class they have to attend.

So it should not have been a surprise that there was a panic when people announced it was shutting down. A lot of childhood memories were made playing the multitude of games they had to offer. This rumor was likely caused by another concern. Although Coolmath isn’t shutting down, it won’t be accessible to people who have Adobe Flash.

Students were devastated and or concerned about not being able to play CoolMath Games. When the news hit all over the school, some thought it was a joke at first and didn’t care until news reports and the media confirmed it. According to Cool Math Games’ shut down is a hoax: “Since the site’s opening in 1997, Cool Math Games has been an escape for students during stressful, boring school days.”

Lindsey Boyd, a 7th grader at Dobie, Who plays Coolmath Games once a week said she enjoys CoolMath. “My favorite Coolmath game is Run and I will miss it because it helped me vent…I would be sad [ If it would shut down ] because, it was a place that I could have fun,” said Boyed.

Many still believe the actual site is being terminated but according to Newsweek, Adobe will no longer be supporting Flash as it is a threat to the system. This will then cause merely every game on the site to no longer be accessible(to people who still use Flash). Since Flash will no longer be supported,it shall be replaced with HTML5, on the 16th of February, which is up to date in security.

Elina Turk,an 8th grader at Dobie, who loves the Pizzeria games said she enjoys CoolMath games. “All of the Papa Pizzeria games [are my favorite],” said Turk. “I’d be pretty sad [if it would shut down] because it was a big part of my childhood,” said Turk.

Like Newsweek said, Flash would be shutting down to begin with, after all, they’ve most likely used Flash so many times to play the games on Coolmath. The answer is simple, it was a risk. Back before all of this,Adobe Flash was starting to become a security risk.

According to Flash is dead, “Hackers are constantly finding new methods to use Flash to jump to a specific memory address on your machine… and take control of your entire computer (not just the web browser)”. The people behind Adobe have tried to fix this with updates and patches but the problem is just part of the program itself. However, there are alternatives to Flash, most noticeably HTML5. Most websites have already made the change from Adobe to HTML5, which means that hanging onto flash isn’t in somebody’s best interests.

Stella Longoria, an 8th grader at Dobie, said she’d cry for a week if it shut down. “[ my favorite game] probably gotta be papas Scooperia and I would miss it, and I’d cry for a week. I thought it would last longer because it’s been around for so long,” said Longoria.
