Only now, the public's affinity for the grocery chain has surpassed the groceries themselves into a curiosity behind its very culture. The inspiration
In the store's podcast, the founder of Trader Joe's himself — otherwise known asthe real Trader Joe, Joe Coulombe — addressed this question. As it turns out, the Hawaiian theme isn't quite as random as it seems. In 1967, the year that Joe found what is now America's favorite grocery store, viaPeople, he experienced a combination of travel and literature that inspired the store's theme. As Joe toldthe podcastlisteners, "I'd been reading a book called 'White Shadows in the South Seas,' and I'd been to the Disneyland jungle trip, and it all coalesced."
