Tried to contact Apple Support but need to provide serial #. I copied/pasted serial # several times but I am continually informed that the number isn't recognized. I bought my computer on June 24th and am trying to get the OS Mountain Lion because it is supposed to be free for anyone who purchased computer after June 11th.
Thoughts...

It looks like the question to our problem (and it looks like several of us) isn't even getting read.
We are all other users here and, since we do not work for Apple, it is quite possible that no one has an answer for you.
You didn't post any information on your model/year which is always helpful.
There are several possible reasons - for one, if the logic board was replaced, the serial number was changed and, unless the repair guy registered that with Apple, the serial number will not be recognized. Another is that the computer is long past the warranty period.

that doesn't answer the question. I get the serial number; same as on the back of the computer identical to where it's posted on About this Mac. But the number isn't recognized when I try to contact apple support!

Call Apple again (they have more than 1 person working there!) and explain the issue. If you bought the machine refurbished that may account for the problem as the refurbished machines are flashed with a new SN. If the first level tech cannot help ask for the case to be escolated to a senior supervisor.
By the way it help if you were a little more polite, we are all end users like you, however we are volunteering our time and energy. Apple does not read or participate in these forums.

the second response is a bit more helpful, thanks.
Sorry to appear impolite but I looked for "all replies" to this issue that has been a tip of an iceberg (my powerpc apps are no longer supported and I can't update the computer without getting the serial number recognized). So when I only see a single reply to my exact same problem, and the response is only the canned answer that shows on the first line of a google search, it gets pretty frustrating. It looks like the question to our problem (and it looks like several of us) isn't even getting read.

It's on the box or you can also find it by clicking the Apple Symbol in the upper left of this screen, then click About this Mac and where it says Version 10.7.4 click 2x and the serial number will appear.
