We live in a noisy world. Everywhere we go, we are bombarded by sounds, voices, music, advertisem*nts and notifications.
Constantly communicating with others, either in person or on the phone or online, we are expected to express our opinions, share our feelings and participate in conversations.
As a result, some of us are afraid of being left out, ignored or even misunderstood.
But what if you are told that there is a better way to live?
A way that can improve your health, happiness, relationships and make you smarter and more wiser?
That way is Silence.
The absence of sound.
The state of being quiet.
The act of not speaking.
There are many people who think that silence is boring, awkward or rude. Others think that silence is a sign of weakness and ignorance and is something to be avoided or filled.
But that is not really true.
Silence is golden! And it is so for many reasons.
Here are some of them:
Silence is good for your health.
Studies show that noise pollution causes stress, anxiety, insomnia, hearing loss, high blood pressure, heart disease and other health problems. Silence can lower your blood pressure, calm your nerves, relax your muscles and boost your immune system. Indeed it helps you sleep better and heal faster.
Silence is good for your happiness.
Silence can help you focus on the present moment, appreciate the beauty of nature and enjoy the simple pleasures of life. It helps you meditate, pray or reflect on your values and dreams, and help you cope with negative emotions such as anger or fear.
Silence is good for your relationships.
Silence helps you listen more attentively, understand more deeply and empathize more sincerely with others. It also helps you avoid arguments, conflicts and misunderstandings.
Silence is good for your intelligence.
Silence can help you learn more effectively, remember more accurately and think more creatively. It can help you solve problems, make decisions and plan ahead too.
Silence is good for your wisdom.
Silence can help you gain insight, perspective and wisdom from your own experiences and observations. It helps you access your intuition, inner voice and higher self.
But how can you practice silence in your daily life?
Here are some tips:
- Set aside some time every day for silence. You can choose to do this in the morning when you wake up, in the evening before you go to bed or anytime in between. You can do this at home or outside in nature.
- Turn off or mute any sources of noise or distraction. This includes your phone, computer, TV, radio and any other devices or appliances that make noise.
- Find a comfortable place where you won’t be disturbed or interrupted.
- Sit or lie down in a relaxed position.
- Close your eyes or gaze softly at a point in front of you.
- Breathe slowly and deeply.
- Let go of any thoughts, feelings or sensations that arise in your mind or body.
- And Just Be Silent.
You don’t have to do this for long. Even 10 minutes of silence a day can make a difference in due course.
Of course, you don’t have to be silent all the time.
You can still talk when it is necessary and beneficial.
But try to talk less and listen more.
Try to choose your words carefully and wisely.
Try to say only what is true, kind and helpful.
Remember, speech is silver and silence is golden.
So, the next time you feel like talking too much, think twice before you open your mouth.
You might be better off keeping it shut.
Silence is golden.
Try it today. You can thank me later :)
