Wordle, the new game for anyone who has access to a web browser, tasks players with six guesses to figure out a five-letter word. When players first log on to Wordle’s website each day, they are presented with five empty boxes. They need to guess the five-letter word of the day but are given no direction or hint as to what that word might be.
So, players are left with little choice but to type in a word at random and hope for the best. In fact, Wordle does give hints which help players narrow down what the word could be. This only happens after the first word, which means picking a good first word is important, especially one with a few different vowels.

In Wordle, the boxes the letters are in turn different colors, either green, yellow, or grey. Then players are prompted to type in another word. The colors are hints as to how close to the target word they were. It’s worth noting that the game also has accessibility settings. There is a dark mode, which turns the background black, and a color blind mode, which changes the colors from green and yellow to orange and blue, respectively. The grey letters stay the same in both modes, though.
The Colors Of The Boxes Are Hints In Wordle
Green boxes (or orange in color blind mode) are the best. This means that not only did players correctly guess a letter within the words, but it is also in the correct position. For example, say that the Wordle daily word puzzle answer is “smith,” but the player types in “style.” The S would turn green, indicating it’s the correct letter in the correct position. If the letter is in the word but in the wrong position, the box will turn yellow (or blue in color blind mode). So, in the previous example, the T in “style” turns yellow, because it is also in “smith,” but not in that position. Finally, boxes turn grey if they are not featured in the word at all. The Y, L, and E, would be grey boxes because none of those letters appear anywhere in “smith.”
Now, if the player were to type in “smite,” the S, M, I, and T letters are all green, meaning they are the correct letters in the correct position. The E is still grey. The player knew it wouldn’t be in the word because it wasn’t previously; however, it can still help them figure out the word.Wordle does allow players to repeat mistakes like this but players should be careful because they only get six tries.
