World Record! NSE handles 1,971 crore transactions in a single trading session on Wednesday (2024)

India's largest stock exchange, NSE, set a world record on Wednesday for processing the highest number of transactions in a single trading day, with 1,971 crore orders, announced CEO Ashish Chauhan in a tweet. This equates to an average of 28.55 crore trades per day within the span of 6 hours and 15 minutes.

"@nseindia handled the highest ever - world record - number of transactions in a single day today on June 5, 2024, in a 6 hours and 15 minutes (915 am to 330 pm) single trading day- 1971 crore (19.71 billion) orders per day. 28.55 crore (280.55 million) trades per day," said Chauhan on erstwhile Twitter and now X platform.

Today, trading volumes surged as markets regained confidence after a tumultuous Tuesday. The headline index, Nifty, closed at 21,884.50, a decline of 1,379.40 points or 5.93% from the previous session.

Today, Nifty started with a gap-up and grew their lead as the session progressed. The 50-stock index finally settled at 22,620, up by 736 points or 3.36%. Banking and financial stocks were instrumental in bulls taking control of the Street. The banking gauge Nifty Bank shot up by 2,126 points or 4.53% to close at 49,055.

The top index contributors were HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and Reliance Industries (RIL) with support from other Nifty stalwarts like Infosys, ITC, and Mahindra & Mahindra.

Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone (APSEZ), IndusInd Bank, Hindalco Industries, and M&M were the top gainers. On the flip side, just 2 stocks from the Nifty pack -- Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and Bharat Petroleum Corporations (BPCL) -- ended with cuts.

On Saturday, Chauhan informed about yet another achievement where NSE was awarded for the implementation of T+1 settlement in India by Global Custodian.
