What is xcm in Polkadot? ›

The Cross-Consensus Message Format, or XCM, is a messaging format and language used to communicate between consensus systems. One of Polkadot's main functionalities is interoperability amongst parachains and any other participating consensus-driven systems.

The XCM format in large part draws upon a highly domain-specific virtual machine, called the Cross-Consensus Virtual Machine or XCVM. XCM messages correspond directly to version-aware XCVM programmes, and the XCVM instruction set represents the repertoire of actions from which an XCM message may be composed.

XCM is an ERC-20 crypto asset designed to power the Coinmetro ecosystem, while providing all users with opportunities such as staking, referrals, and unique tokenomics.
