Yami Gautam, alongside Emraan Hashmi, stars in the upcoming courtroom drama 'Haq', directed by Suparn S. Varma. Set for release on November 7, the film draws inspiration from one of India's most significant legal cases, the Shah Bano verdict, exploring themes of Muslim women's rights, faith, and the impact of secular justice.
In an exclusive interview with Sonal Kalra, Chief Managing Editor (Entertainment and Lifestyle) at HT City's Stars In The City, Yami discussed her approach to the character, addressing the perceptions surrounding her on-screen image. Sonal posed a thought-provoking question: "In today's climate, when you take on such roles, you're often associated with nationalism. While this image may not be inherently positive or negative, it's a perception that persists. As a Bollywood actress, you're seen as a symbol of tradition, contrasting with the westernized portrayals of other actresses. How do you navigate this perception in your social media feedback and the roles you choose?"
Yami Gautam emphasized the importance of creative motivation in her career, stating, "If my choices are driven by anything other than creativity, the essence of being an artist is lost. My career isn't built on controversy or clickbait; I've been in the industry since 2012, and my focus remains consistent."
She continued, "I've always been true to myself, even with my unconventional debut in 2012. My goal is to stay true to the person I've always been, despite the fluctuations in my career."
Yami also highlighted the importance of finding one's purpose in the industry, "It takes time to establish yourself and understand your goals. I've never sought an easy path; my existence here is meaningful only through my work, which is why my script, role, and team are so crucial."
Addressing the nationalistic narrative surrounding her roles, Yami clarified, "Perceptions of my work are not taken personally. I don't cater to every thought process. My focus is on delivering my best, and I'm proud to portray unsung heroes of the nation."
When asked about 'Haq' and her character, Yami explained, "'Haq' is a legal drama inspired by the Shah Bano case, a pivotal moment for Muslim women's rights in India. My character, inspired by Shah Bano Begum, is a significant part of the film's narrative."
The real-life case of Mohd. Ahmad Khan v. Shah Bano Begum, where an elderly woman sought maintenance from her divorced husband, led to a landmark 1985 Supreme Court ruling, sparking nationwide debate and influencing India's social and legal landscape.
