This question that has cropped up repeatedly since we published this original post. The short answer is no, you should not tip your Airbnb host. Tipping is a way of showing appreciation for good service, but Airbnb hosts don’t see what they’re doing as a service as such – rather, they’re sharing their home with you as an equal. You and they co-exist in the same space; they do not ‘serve’ you in the same way that hotel staff might do. As such, there is no need to tip them. If you want to show your appreciation, a small gift such as a box of chocolates or even just a note would be more appropriate.
Post: “If there’s a fee associated with it I don’t really see a reason to tip. I look at Airbnbs as different than a hotel…if there’s a cleaning fee, I’m not gonna pay extra. Cleaning services are different than hotel cleaning services: ‘This is my business; I charge rates so I don’t need tips.’ … I’d not put it in the same category as hotel cleaning staff.”
And from Airbnb: Should I tip my experience host? It's up to you. Your host set a price they expect will fully cover your experience. We suggest you research cultural hospitality norms in your destination. If you want to show appreciation for your host, write a review encouraging other guests to book their trip.
The amount you tip will depend upon the quality and quantity of service, length of your stay, and the size of your group. A suggested gratuity of 20%-25% of the villa rental cost is split among the staff. If your rental was $5000 USD, then plan on $1000-$1250 USD in gratuity.
In the U.S. and Canada, tipping 18- to 25-percent on all services is a general rule of thumb for corporate trips. If you take a taxi ride, a two- to five-dollar tip should be added on to the fare. If you receive assistance with luggage or housekeeping, a few dollars are acceptable.
The American Hotel & Lodging Association suggests leaving a $1-to-$5 tip per day for the housekeeping staff. The tipping range is helpful when estimating your trip budget, but how much you should ultimately tip depends on a few factors (more on this later).
The desk and nightstand are both good spots; just steer clear of the bed. Tips can easily be lost as the sheets are getting stripped. If the hotel provides stationery, it's nice to leave the money in an envelope and include a brief note expressing your thanks.
Airbnb hosts are service providers. They set their own rates and they can build in or add any extra charges they need covered, so tipping is unnecessary. If you want to show your gratitude for an exceptional stay, write a note or consider giving a small gift.
If you prefer to tip staff members individually, bring $150 to $200 for a one-week vacation, preferably in smaller denominations, so you don't have to ask for change. One great way not to blow your budget is to separate your cash into envelopes for each day of your stay.
When dining out in America, waiters and waitresses usually receive a tip amounting to 15-20% of the total bill. Tour guides and activity providers are along the same lines at 10-20%. For group tours or a short excursion, the tip can be lower. For private tours and day-long activities, the tip can be on the higher end.
How Much Do You Tip at All-Inclusive Resorts? For a one-week stay at an all-inclusive resort, a couple should budget to spend about $150 US (or the local currency equivalent) total in tips. This means that you should bring about $20 in small bills with you to spend on tips throughout the day.
