Tips for answering job application questions

Use the STAR technique (AKA “show don't tell”) to answer where possible. Provide concrete examples, not just statements. Write original answers – don't copy and paste from resumes or cover letters. Avoid plain “yes” or “no” answers.

If your status says “Under Consideration,” your application has passed the initial review and is being considered by the employer. This status means your application met the primary qualifications for the position, and the hiring team is interested in taking the next steps to learn more about you.

An application, also referred to as an application program or application software, is a computer software package that performs a specific function directly for an end user or, in some cases, for another application. An application can be self-contained or a group of programs.

If you're responding to a message from another person, get them engaged within the conversation and give them a true response that is at least a sentence or 2 long. Sometimes, it's perfectly acceptable to respond with “o*k” if it makes sense in the context. But avoid the “K” reply, which can feel terse and rude.

Provide a Brief Highlight-Summary of Your Experience

The best way to answer "Tell me about yourself" is with a brief highlight-summary of your experience, your education, the value you bring to an employer, and the reason you're looking forward to learning more about this next job and the opportunity to work with them.

“Under Review” means that your application has been received and is in the screening or background check process. There is nothing else you need to do.

“Under consideration” means your application is under detailed review by the recruiter.

In-progress often means that the HR department has received the necessary documents and details from you. This can be a common status as a hiring department reviews your credentials, references and other required documents.

By answering optional questions, you can highlight your desirable skills, experiences, or elements of your background.

I know the question itself might mislead you to go more personally in your reply, but keep it related to your career. Start with the present. Summarize your current job title and one recent achievement relevant to the job you are applying for. It's even better if you can mention numbers and percentages.
