What is Greenguard Gold Certified paint? ›

GREENGUARD Gold requires paint formulas to undergo rigorous annual testing for more than 360 VOCs and hazardous chemicals—so you can feel confident bringing our paint into your home. When it comes to our products, we go above and beyond industry regulations.

It's the first complete professional line that not only has zero VOCs* (volatile organic compounds), but is also available in four sheens and every color – including deep, vivid hues. All while delivering maximum value with easy application and outstanding durability and touch-up.

No or low-VOC paint may be better for people with health concerns since they have fewer VOCs, but they still contain toxic ingredients. A better alternative for those with health concerns is paint labeled "non-toxic" or "natural."

It is completely safe to sleep in a room the same day it is painted if you use Zero-VOC paint. Zero-VOC paint is virtually odorless and does not emit toxic chemicals that can produce long-term adverse health effects when inhaled.

GREENGUARD Gold Certified products can help to minimize your child's exposure to chemical emissions and may be a factor to consider when shopping for baby gear. There are also phthalates to consider. In recent years there has been plenty of buzz over this group of chemicals that are used to make plastics more durable.

In order to be certified, the product must meet specific requirements set forth by UL: GREENGUARD Certification: Total VOC emission rate of 500 μg/m. GREENGUARD Gold Certification: Total VOC emission rate of 220 μg/m.

Avoid harsh chemical fumes with zero VOC paint

Even low VOC paints still off-gas and emit noticeable fumes. If you have no other option than to use a low-VOC paint, be sure to paint in a well-ventilated area using a respirator, and let the paint dry completely before moving back into the room.

Even low or no VOC paints can have high emissions and odors. Low and no VOC paints still have VOCs, just not as many. When pigment, or color is added to paint, it raises the VOC levels. Odors can also come from other chemicals in the paint are not considered VOCs.

VOCs emitted from paint do dissipate overtime, after the paint dries on the wall but this process can take a while with most dispelling within the first six months after application.

How can you tell if a paint is zero VOC? ›

In general, low- or zero-VOC paints tend to be water-based and have significantly lower odor than oil/solvent-based paints. Flat (or matte) paints with fewer than 50 grams of VOCs per liter are generally considered to be low-VOC, while a zero-VOC paint is one with fewer than 5 grams per liter.

It depends. Modern paints that are non-toxic (i.e., no silicates or lead), non-odor, and no-VOC are safest to use around babies. But that doesn't mean there is no threat to your baby. Know the right painting processes and health information before you start your project.

Formaldehyde, for example, must be detected at under 50 parts per billion (ppb) to earn the GREENGUARD Certification but under a much lower 7.6 ppb to reach GREENGUARD Gold status.
