How much is a 1980 Susan B. Anthony $1 coin worth? ›

According to the NGC Price Guide, the estimated value of an 1980 P Susan B. Anthony Silver Dollar in Mint State (MS) is between $2 and $600 in the current market.

The 1980-S Susan B. Anthony Dollar is likely the first coin from this series, other than the Wide Rime, that we can call more scarce. They are still considered easy to find, but there are certainly a lot less of these. The strike on this coin will range from coin to coin because of faulty dies.

On average, a Susan B Anthony coin that has been previously circulated is worth about $1.05-$1.35. Since they were originally $1 coins, they have only increased slightly in numismatic value. However, there are some exceptions to this rule. A coin in pristine, uncirculated condition can sell for up to $1950.

As few Susan B. Anthony dollars circulated, many remain available in uncirculated condition and are worth little above face value. However, some date and mint mark varieties are relatively valuable. The 1981 coins, having been issued only to collectors, are valued above the other circulation strikes in the series.

The obverse (heads) features the likeness of Susan B. Anthony. The reverse (tails) shows an American eagle landing on the Moon, an adaptation of the Apollo 11 insignia used on the Eisenhower Dollar.

Therefore, the 1999 Susan B. Anthony Dollar is very common and examples in Uncirculated grades are easily obtainable. Only in MS67 condition do they become somewhat scarce but they probably still exist in the thousands in this condition.

Mint Marks

The mint produced Susan B. Anthony dollars at three different mints: Philadelphia (P), Denver (D), and San Francisco (S). As illustrated in the photo below, the mint mark is located on the obverse of the coin, in the lower left-hand area, just above the shoulder of Susan B Anthony.

Examples graded and certified from AU50 up to Mint State are worth only a small premium over face value of between 10 and 50 cents, for a total of $1.10 to $1.50. For all grades below AU50, the 1980-D dollar is generally worth between face value and $1.05.

Anthony Dollars, the “S” mintmark takes on the appearance of a blobby silhouette, with the Type I proof appearing more like a rounded rectangle with a diagonal line across the middle rather than a clearly defined “S,” as seen with the Type 2 variety.
