Dutch currency

As in most European countries, the currency of the Netherlands is the Euro (symbolised as EUR or €). Other currencies (like USD, or GBP) are normally not accepted in Amsterdam, so be sure to change your currency before your trip, or at one of the official currency exchange offices located throughout the city.

Exchanging currency in The Netherlands

To convert your currency to the Euro, you have a couple of options. You can either visit your bank or head to a foreign currency exchange office, known as a "geldwisselkantoor" or "GWK" in Dutch. These exchange offices, like GWK Travelex, are found at Amsterdam Central Station, Amsterdam Schiphol Airport and various other locations for your convenience.

When converting your money, it is important to be aware of the exchange rate used. Note that this exchange rate can be different at any time. Cash and ATM's in Amsterdam

In Amsterdam you can find plenty of ATMs (Automated Teller Machines) and cashpoints everywhere throughout the city. Bigger hotels often have cash machines as well.

Paying at restaurants in Amsterdam

Many restaurants and bars in Amsterdam do accept credit cards, but not all of them do. It is therefore recommended that you ask before ordering. Therefore, before ordering, always ask whether your preferred payment method is possible. Keep in mind that more and more hospitality businesses are cash-free. Therefore, it is often no longer possible to pay with cash at these locations. In addition, €200 and €500 notes are hardly accepted anywhere.

Tipping in Amsterdam

Service is always included. However, it is customary to tip in restaurants and bars. As a general rule tipping between 5 and 10% is acceptable.
