A Century of Cheers: Anita's Theatre's Unforgettable Journey!
Imagine a place where history whispers from every corner, where the echoes of laughter and applause still linger in the air. That place is Anita's Theatre, a regional cultural icon celebrating an incredible 100 years of entertaining the masses!
In 2011, the theater's then-owner, John Comelli, made headlines when he sold the beloved venue to clear debts. He had poured a staggering $6 million into its stunning fit-out.
Step inside, and you'll immediately understand why. The theater is a testament to meticulous craftsmanship, from the ornate light fixtures to the detailed wall and ceiling paintings, and the bespoke mosaic tiling. Venue manager Bob Mangan marvels at the incredible detail, noting that "every fixture, every fitting...was chosen for a reason."
And this is the part most people miss... the bathrooms! Yes, even the restrooms are Instagram-worthy, thanks to high-end taps and mirrors.
From Cinema to Skating Rink: A Transformation Story
But here's where it gets controversial... the theater has lived three distinct lives. It began as a movie cinema, transformed into a roller-skating rink, and finally, evolved into the live music theatre we know today. The very foundations have shifted, with the skating rink's concrete floor sitting 2 meters below the auditorium's current wooden floorboards.
Comelli's love for the venue was clear. He bought the then-Kings Theatre in 2003, renaming it in honor of his wife, Anita, who sadly passed away during the 2005 refurbishment. After changing hands a couple of times, entertainment giant Live Nation took ownership in 2022.
In the last three years alone, Anita's has welcomed over 160,000 fans to nearly 300 shows, showcasing an impressive 82% of Australian homegrown talent, according to Mr. Mangan.
Feeling the History: The Stage's Allure
Darren Coggan, a Wollongong musician, has graced Anita's stage four times. One more performance, and he'll join the exclusive "Encore Club" for performers who have played the venue at least five times. He describes the theater as a "very theatrical world," with an undeniable character that sets it apart from more modern venues.
Australian cover band Hindley Street Country Club will be the first inductees into the Encore Club and will perform during the theatre's week of birthday celebrations. Band member Constantine Delo highlights the venue's ability to remind people why they fell in love with live music.
A Stage for All: Local and International Acts
Anita's Theatre strikes a perfect balance, providing a supportive and unique venue for local musicians while also attracting bigger acts to the regional area. Many international bands touring Australia's capital cities now include Anita's Theatre on their schedules.
Coggan points out the convenience, stating that audiences can see the same shows as in capital cities, without the added costs of travel and accommodation. He hopes it continues for another 100 years.
