Start a request within 72 hours

If you're experiencing an issue during your stay, you can ask your Host to fix it, request a partial refund, or request to cancel your reservation for a full refund.

If you need to cancel

Just put in a change request to the Host and any difference in price will be shown before you confirm the request. You could also message the Host as well, to let them know more about your circ*mstance and why you're changing the reservation.

Can a guest cancel Airbnb reservation? There are several reasons why a guest might request a refund: family and health issues that can cause a guest to cancel a trip, weather events that impact a person's travel plans, or even work trips can fall through at the last minute.

What to do if your Host asks you to cancel. If your Host lets you know that they can't accommodate your stay anymore, don't cancel for them. Instead, send them a message asking them to cancel. That way, you'll be eligible to receive a full refund.

Hosts who cancel confirmed bookings without a valid reason may experience other consequences, as explained in our Terms of Service and ground rules for Hosts. For example, Hosts may have their Listing or account suspended or removed, and may lose their Superhost status.

When you can cancel or withdraw a request. First, check the status of your request. If the Host has already accepted it, then it's subject to their cancellation policy. If it's still pending, you can cancel, and you won't be charged for the reservation or the service fees.

Airbnb refund policies

Moderate: Cancellable until five days before your stay for a full refund. Firm: Cancel 30 days before the stay and receive a full refund; cancel between 7 and 30 days before your stay and receive a 50% refund; no refund if canceled fewer than 7 days before the stay.

Message your Host

Generally it's a good idea to try talking to your Host first. You can message your Host directly to discuss a solution. If you come to an agreement with your Host on a resolution, there's a higher chance your request will be approved.

What is a valid cancellation reason for Airbnb? ›

Valid cancellation reasons include: Circ*mstances beyond the Host's control, such as major damage to a listing, emergency repairs (like a gas leak or a burst pipe), or serious personal illness that prevents hosting.

As a host, if you cancel, an indelible mark appears on your reviews and in your statistics. As a guest, you can block a host's dates and cancel as many times as you want, it does not appear on your profile.

"For a full refund of accommodation fees, cancellation must be made within 48 hours of booking and at least 14 full days prior to listing's local check-in time (or 3:00 PM if not specified) on the day of check-in."

If this happens, you'll get a full refund and you can rebook the experience if you want. Another reason a Host may cancel is if they required ID from you as the primary guest, but didn't receive it within 3 days of booking. Again, if the reservation is canceled, you'll be refunded.

Eligible refunds are initiated by Airbnb as soon as you cancel the reservation, but how long it takes for you to receive the money depends on your bank or financial institution. Find the average refund timelines.

Cancellation fees

If the reservation is canceled 48 hours or less before check-in, or after check-in, the fee is 50% of the reservation amount for the nights not stayed. If the reservation is canceled anytime between 48 hours and 30 days before check-in, the fee is 25% of the reservation amount.

Make changes during your trip or after checkout

Already on your trip and looking to change your reservation dates? Submit a trip change request in Trips—if your Host accepts, your reservation will be updated and you'll be charged or refunded as necessary.

It's pretty easy—just go to Trips to submit a change request. But before you cancel, be sure to read the cancellation policy for your stay to find out if you get a refund (and how much). If you've booked a place where there's a more strict cancellation policy, you could also consider changing your dates instead.
