Saul Canelo Alvarez is currently the biggest star in world boxing, last May 7 he fought against Russian Dmitry Bivol for the World Boxing Association light heavyweight world title, the Mexican lost by unanimous decision, but the knockout came below the ring.
Canelo is the fighter who currently sells the most, the one who generates the most money, both in tickets, sponsors and pay-per-view sales, but against Bivol he did not do well at all.
The Mexican has had spectacular PPV numbers, he took the baton from Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao, but against Bivol he didn't do so well.
According to Dan Rafael, Canelo vs. Bivol sold 550 thousand ppv's, far from DAZN's expectations, the English company was projecting approximately one million sales, the fight was half that.
While these are not bad numbers, any other fighter would want them, for Canelo's level and hierarchy they can hardly seem regular. Alvarez lost both in and out of the ring.
Canelo's other numbers
To put into perspective what Canelo has sold throughout his career we will put the numbers into perspective.
Canelo vs. Golovkin I sold 1.3 million homes; Canelo-Golovkin II 1.1 million; Alvarez vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. sold 1.2 million.
Against Puerto Rican Miguel Angel Cotto 900 thousand homes were sold and against Caleb Plant 800 thousand.
Lowest and highest numbers
Canelo's lowest numbers were against Billy Joe Saunders and Liam Smith; against the former people bought 400 thousand, while against Smith barely 300 thousand, very low numbers for the star that the Mexican is.
The biggest sale in which Canelo has participated was against Floyd Mayweather Jr., that distant September 14, 2013, the sale was 2.2 million home, the maximum that the Aztec has sold.
The record for most sales is held by the fight between Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao with 2.6 million purchases.
