Leading up to the fight between Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez and Jaime Munguia from the Cinco de Mayo weekend, the Mexican champion kept being askedabout David Benavidez. For more than a year now, the Mexican/American fighter has been pursuing a fight against Alvarez for the Super Middleweight title. So far, Alvarez has avoided him successfully but there seems to be an inevitable point of convergence between both fighters that will happen no matter what. David was right there after Canelo's fight and even declined an invitation to step on the ring for a face-off. Benavidez decided to stay on his seat and only glared at Alvarez from a distance.
Canelo is asking $200 million to fight Benavidez
Both before and after the fight, Saul 'Caelo' Alvarez kept telling journalists he would be willing to fight David Benavodez if he was offered $200 million for it. Many regard this as a confirmation that he doesn't want to fight at all. However, there are those who could definitely offer him $200 million to fight against Benavidez. In Saudi Arabia, the Riyadh organizers are willing to offer outragous sums of money to the best fighters in order world in order to be part of their events. Massive names have already fought in Riyadh with a great deal of success. But Canelo doing the same thing isn't such a great idea with that amount of money on the line.
Paying Canelo that much to fight means the event will have a terrible undercard, they will only afford to pay fighters who are not as known around the world for the undercard. For this fight to generate massive income above the $200 million that would cost to secure Canelo, we would have to get an event with enough attention to amass at least $500 million in revenue. Only Floyd Mayweather has been able to do something like that before, and he did it twice. The first time was when he fought Manny Pacquiao, that fight generated $600 million. The same amount was generated when Floyd fought Conor McGregor. But none of those fights got Mayweather paid $200 million. What Alvarez asks is almost impossible to achieve. Does this mean he actually doesn't want to fight?
