Cape Town Elite: Women's Seeds Battle Through Tie-Breakers (2025)

Hold onto your seats, beach volleyball fans, because the Cape Town Elite tournament just served up a thrilling dose of drama! Top-ranked women's teams were pushed to the brink in tie-breakers, proving that even the best can be challenged by determined underdogs. But here's where it gets really interesting: despite the nail-biting moments, all six pool leaders emerged victorious, securing their spots in the second playoff round. And this is the part most people miss: five of these top seeds faced fierce competition from qualifier teams in their opening matches, showcasing the incredible depth of talent in this tournament.

In a display of resilience and skill, Thamela Coradello and Victoria Lopes of Brazil, the top-seeded duo, battled back from a set down against Norwegian qualifiers Nina Pavlova and Sunniva Helland-Hansen. Their 2-1 victory (17-21, 21-15, 15-11) in Pool A was a testament to their determination. They then dominated Lithuanian Olympians Monika Paulikiene and Aine Raupelyte in a 2-0 (21-19, 21-13) sweep, securing their place in the round of 12. Interestingly, Pavlova and Helland-Hansen, seeded 24th, also advanced after a stunning comeback against Italy’s Claudia Scampoli and Giada Bianchi, winning 2-1 (19-21, 21-19, 15-13) to claim third place in the pool.

But here's the controversial question: Are tie-breakers a true test of skill, or do they simply add an element of unpredictability that can favor the underdog?

In Pool B, second-seeded Italians Valentina Gottardi and Reka Orsi Toth faced a grueling tie-breaker against American qualifiers Carly Kan and Devanne Sours, eventually winning 2-1 (21-17, 16-21, 19-17). They later dominated the pool final with a 2-0 (21-12, 21-15) victory over Czechia’s Marketa Svozilova and Marie-Sara Stochlova. Kan and Sours secured their playoff spot by defeating Brazilians Vitoria Rodrigues and Hegeile Almeida in straight sets.

Pool C followed a similar pattern, with third-seeded Germans Svenja Muller and Cinja Tillmann surviving a three-set battle against Lithuanian qualifiers Ieva Vasiliauskaite and Erika Kliokmanaite, 2-1 (21-19, 20-22, 15-7). They then clinched the pool with a 2-0 (21-19, 21-18) win over Austria’s Dorina and Ronja Klinger. Vasiliauskaite and Kliokmanaite bounced back to secure third place with a 2-1 (21-16, 14-21, 15-11) victory over Czechia’s Kylie Neuschaeferova and Martina Maixnerova.

Pool D was a rollercoaster, with fourth-seeded Swiss twins Anouk and Zoe Verge-Depre surviving tie-breakers in both matches. They edged out American opponents Teegan Van Gunst and Piper Ferch, 2-1 (21-16, 24-26, 15-7), and Corinne Quiggle and Chloe Loreen, 2-1 (21-12, 16-21, 15-13). Van Gunst and Ferch claimed third place after defeating South African favorites Tatiana Simopoulos and Costandina Kinsey.

In Pool F, a German showdown saw sixth-seeded Linda Bock and Louisa Lippmann rally from a set down to defeat Estonian qualifiers Heleene Hollas and Liisa Remmelg, 2-1 (18-21, 21-17, 15-11). They then secured a 2-0 (22-20, 21-17) victory over seventh-seeded compatriots Sandra Ittlinger and Anna-Lena Grune. In a tense third-place match, Lithuania’s Vasiliauskaite and Kliokmanaite outlasted Hollas and Remmelg, 2-0 (21-19, 21-19).

Pool E stood out as the only pool without tie-breakers, with Dutch Olympians Katja Stam and Raisa Schoon making a strong statement by defeating French Olympians Clemence Vieira and Aline Chamereau, 2-0 (21-14, 21-14). However, they fell to fifth-seeded Latvians Tina Graudina and Anastasija Samoilova in the pool final, 2-0 (21-16, 21-18). Vieira and Chamereau advanced after a swift victory over Mozambican qualifiers Vanessa Muianga and Mercia Mucheza.

As the tournament heats up, the first women’s elimination round kicks off on Friday at 18:00 local time (16:00 UTC), with the round of 12 and quarterfinals scheduled for Saturday. So, what’s your take? Do tie-breakers truly measure a team’s mettle, or do they introduce an element of luck that can tip the scales? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
