Community's Heartbreaking Tribute: Remembering the Victims of the Gladstone House Fire (2025)

A heart-wrenching tragedy has gripped the Queensland community, leaving us all asking: How could such a devastating act of violence claim the lives of a loving mother and two innocent boys? But here’s where it gets even more heartbreaking—Jordana Johnson, 36, her son Jordan Norris, 13, and his best friend Chazz Mather, 12, were allegedly murdered in a house fire that has shaken Gladstone to its core. This isn’t just a story; it’s a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the strength of community bonds.

WARNING: This article includes the names and images of those who have passed, shared with the permission of their families, particularly for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander readers.

On October 15, emergency services rushed to a Toolooa property just before 6 a.m., only to find the top floor of the home collapsed, hindering rescue efforts. The fire claimed the lives of Jordana, Jordan, and Chazz, all of whom were deeply loved members of their community. Jordana and Jordan, both of Goreng Goreng and South Sea Islander heritage, and Chazz, a cherished member of the local Maori community, left an indelible mark on those who knew them.

And this is the part most people miss—the alleged perpetrator, Contessa Leigh Marie Richardson, 37, from Toolooa, has been charged with three counts of murder and two counts of arson. Her case has been adjourned, leaving many questions unanswered and a community seeking justice.

In a powerful display of unity, over 1,000 people gathered at Barney Point Beach in Yallarm (the traditional name for Gladstone) to honor the victims. The event featured traditional dancing, a smoking ceremony, an ocean cleansing ritual, and a water blessing—all deeply meaningful practices for the Gooreng Goreng people, for whom this beach holds special healing significance. The Maori community also performed the Haka in tribute to Chazz, a poignant reminder of the interconnectedness of cultures.

Aunty Juliri Ingra, a Gooreng Goreng elder and Jordana’s cultural grandmother, expressed profound gratitude for the community’s support. “I just want to thank all the community of Gladstone, or Yallarm as we call it, for being here for us and our family as we mourn our loved ones,” she said. “Since this tragedy, I’ve seen the love pouring in from our community.” She fondly remembered Jordana as a “proud Gooreng Goreng girl” and emphasized the unbreakable bond between the Maori and Gooreng Goreng communities.

Here’s where it gets controversial—while the community rallies around the grieving families, questions linger about the circumstances of the fire and the motivations behind such a heinous act. How could someone allegedly commit such a crime? And what more could have been done to prevent this tragedy? These are the questions that continue to haunt us.

Zinnia Gosley, a member of Gladstone’s Maori community, highlighted the support given to Chazz’s family, who had no relatives in the area. “Our Maori community came together to provide them with the support they needed,” she said. “I didn’t know Chazz personally, but hearing about him from his family, it’s heartbreaking that we never had the chance to meet him.”

Chazz and Jordan’s friendship was described as inseparable, with the families stating, “They were like brothers. Our lives, and all those who loved Jordana, Jordan, and Chazz, are forever changed.” Jordana was remembered as a devoted mother who always went out of her way to help others, leaving a legacy of kindness and love.

An online fundraiser has raised over $33,000 to support the affected families, showcasing the community’s generosity. Yet, as we reflect on this tragedy, we’re left with a profound question: How can we better protect our most vulnerable and prevent such senseless acts of violence?

What’s your take? Do you think the community response has been enough, or is there more we could do to support families in times of crisis? Share your thoughts in the comments—let’s keep this important conversation going.
