Unfair Treatment at Indian Airports: A Growing Concern for Entrepreneurs
In a recent development, Wintrack Inc. has once again brought to light the issue of customs harassment, this time at the Delhi airport. The company, which had previously suspended its operations in India due to bribery demands, now highlights the alleged mistreatment of an entrepreneur, Sanjay Kumar Sharma, at the hands of customs officials.
Sharma, a vlogger and entrepreneur, claims to have faced harassment over sample products he was carrying. Despite repeatedly explaining that the items were not for sale, a customs officer demanded receipts for the samples. Wintrack, in a post on X, highlighted this incident, stating that genuine entrepreneurs frequently face such harassment, describing it as a recurring problem at Indian airports.
"It's not just about this one incident. Many travelers, especially entrepreneurs, have similar stories to share. The issue goes beyond social media reach; it's about the systemic challenges entrepreneurs face when traveling for business," the company wrote.
And here's where it gets controversial: Sharma's experience at the Indira Gandhi International Airport was captured on video, which went viral. In the video, he claimed to have been detained for over an hour and a half, even though he cooperated fully with the officials. He emphasized that all his luggage was legal and that the customs officers' demand for bills for sample items was unreasonable.
"I explained that these were samples, and I could provide the supplier's details. But they insisted on seeing a bill. It's absurd to think a sample would come with a bill!" Sharma exclaimed.
Sharma also alleged rude behavior from an officer when he pointed out an incorrectly positioned national flag near the counter. Instead of addressing the issue, the officer suggested Sharma complain to GMR, which, according to Sharma, reflects the attitude that discourages many Indians abroad from returning and contributing to the country.
The conversation took an unpleasant turn when the officer reportedly told Sharma, "I don't want to be like you," to which Sharma responded, "I don't want to be like you because I don't have a government job." This exchange highlights the power dynamics and the potential for abuse of authority.
Delhi Customs has acknowledged the viral video and requested Sharma to share full details of the incident for further investigation. However, as of now, an official comment from Delhi Customs is still pending.
Earlier this month, Wintrack founder Prawin Ganeshan had expressed optimism about the Finance Ministry's inquiry into the company's bribery allegations. He believed that the government was committed to resolving entrepreneurs' issues. However, Wintrack's recent post suggests that there is still a long way to go in ensuring a safe and respectful environment for business travelers at Indian airports.
This incident raises important questions: How can we ensure a fair and respectful treatment of entrepreneurs and travelers at our airports? Are there systemic issues that need addressing? And most importantly, how can we create an environment that encourages and supports entrepreneurship and business growth in India?
