How to Cut Your Cable Bill

In 2012 we cut our cable bill and we’ve never looked back In fact we reaaaaaaaallllllly cut our cable bill and here’s how you can cut your cable bill too. One of THE best decisions we made in regards to our bills was the purchase of three things:

  1. ROKU
  2. PlayOn
  3. Netflix

Roku

We cancelled our cable bill and honestly 6 months later are yet to miss it! The ROKU is a small box that comes with multiple free channels and some you pay a minimum for. You can even get premium sports packages for just $10/month and yes, they have Disney!

You can buy a Roku box from either Amazon, the Roku Website or some bricks and mortar stores.

PlayOn

The PlayOn was added when we scored this crazy deal which you can grab here. With PlayOn, you can use your home network to magically stream your favorite online shows, movies, and home media files from your PC to your TV, smart phone, or tablet. To display videos on your TV, PlayOn relies on a game console or other supported device such as a Roku. Right now they’re running a deal that will give you a FREE Roku when you pay for a lifetime subscription to PlayOn. It’s the deal we used! For under $80 shipped you get the Roku and PlayOn. Can someone say, “NO MORE CABLE BILLS?!

PlayOn Lifetime + a Roku LT* for $59.99 +$9.99 shipping
Get PlayOn Lifetime with a Roku HD instead for $79.99Cut Your Cable Bill | How To Cut Your Cable Bill in Half (2)

You can trial it first before trying it to make sure it’s for you! We personally love it and use it.

If you don’t need the Roku as well they’re having a winter sale: Get a lifetime license of PlayOn for just $39.99!

Here are some of the PlayOn Channels that are most popular. They’re plugins so once you buy PlayOn grab the channels you need. Need to know what ESPN channels come in? Check out ESPN3 Channel. My husband upgraded our package as he LOVES soccer. He bought a MLS package for around $10/month and he gets most of the games he wants in Europe and the US. If you want MLB or another sports package, they’ve got those too. Sure it’s an add-on but not as expensive as cable!

Netflix

Full of movies and other shows, we love our Netflix subscription and you can try it free for 30 days too!

We LOVE Netflix. We catch up on old shows, they have great kid’s movies and kid’s tv shows that we like. We never get a DVD at our house (we use the Redbox for that) but we love streaming it in.

Amazon Streaming

Julie commented: We were Netflixers, but if you mostly do instant streaming of movies, check out Amazon Prime Instant video. It’s a part of the Amazon Prime membership ($79.00/yr, so cheaper than Netflix) and you get free two day ship on all of your Amazon orders along with the unlimited streaming of movies and TV shows. Thanks Julie!

Frequently Asked Questions

My post on Pinterest about this went wild one day (I mean who doesn’t want to ditch their cable bill?) so Hubs and I created a list of Frequently Asked Questions. if you have anymore, please leave a comment so we can help you and others!

Is there ESPN?

Maybe I just have a lot of Mum friends but when I posted this the top question was, “hubby still wants sports. Can he get it?”
Yes, there are lots of sports to pick from.

What internet Service Provider Do you Use?

We’re just outside of Chicago and get AT&T Uverse. We have noticed when we use PlayOn the internet slows down a little but as we rarely use them at the same time we’re fine.

Do you need one Roku box per tv?

Yes.

I have a Wii/Xbox, do I need a Roku?

No sireee but we highly recommend getting PlayOn and Netflix. You can just stream those both through the Wii. We have two Rokus. One for our main tv and one for Tim’s Man Cave!

Here are the 3 links again:

  1. ROKU
  2. PlayOn
  3. Netflix
