It happens to even the most prepared job seekers. You're halfway through the interview, the employer seems to like you, and then you deliver a rambling, off-target or even inappropriate reply to one of her questions. Even one bad answer can damage the good impression you worked so hard to create. However, in many cases you can salvage the interview, provided you know where you went wrong.

Many people form an impression within a few seconds of meeting someone. Often, they view anything the person says or does later within the lens of that initial assessment. When that first impression is positive, it's called the halo effect. For example, if you quickly establish rapport with the interviewer, she's more likely to overlook one flubbed answer. How to Recover
