Homemade Swedish Meatball Sauce Recipe

I’m going to assume that you have either hopped over to my homemade ground beef meatball recipe and made your meatballs OR you have some store-bought meatballs in your freezer…SO once you have your meatballs made you can make so many different kinds of sauces for them to create so many different kinds of meals!

This is how to make an authentic Swedish meatball recipe and it’s SO easy and SO delish…even better than Ikea…that’s my opinion anyway!! This makes a quick meal for those busy weeknights…that is if you already have your meatballs ready to go. You’ll want to put this in your meal plan rotation for sure!

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 C all-purpose flour
  • 2 Tbls butter
  • 1 C half & half or Heavy Cream
  • 1 C Beef Broth ~ I love Better than Bullion ~ it’s deelish!
  • 1 Tsp. of Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1/2 Tsp. Onion Powder
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional ~ Sour Cream…this will make your Homemade Swedish Meatballs more like a Beef Stroganoff.

Directions:

I like to just make everything in a large skillet directly, rather than dirtying up a large bowl AND lots of dishes.

In a large skillet stir flour and butter over medium heat until browned…this can get a little clumpy. if you have too much flour and not enough butter. Make sure you have your flour and butter portions correct…sometimes I’ll add just a little more butter if I need to. If it seems clumpy…don’t worry it will become smooth when you add the rest of your ingredients.

Cooking Tips for Best Results:

  • When making your Swedish Meatball Sauce the best thing to do is add the flour a little bitat a time. This will keep your roux (name for beginning a cream sauce) smooth…add a little more butter if it turns into a big clump.
  • Don’t panic if your butter and flour (roux) are a little clumpy…it will smooth out as you add the other ingredients and cook.
  • If your sauce is too thick, add a little more heavy cream.
  • If your sauce is too thin, just let it simmer longer. Be sure and stir occasionally or the bottom can burn.

Now Slowly whisk in your Half and Half (or heavy cream), Beef Broth, salt, and pepper. Remember, even if there are a couple of clumps floating around in your creamy gravy sauce they will soften and smooth out as you stir and simmer.

How long do you cook meatballs in the sauce?

Bring to a boil. Cook, stirring until thickened and smooth. if gravy has lumps you can pour through a strainer but no need to. Add meatballs to sauce and heat to serving temp. which is about 8 min.or 160 degrees in the middle. I will also cut one of the tender meatballs open to make sure they are heated all the way through.

You can also just make your sauce and cook your meatballs separately. Then pour the sauce over your meatballs and the whole dinner if you like!

Best way to serve Swedish Meatball Sauce

If you want to jazz up your Swedish Meatballs you can always add onions or fresh parsley or green onions sprinkled on top of your Swedish meatballs. I’m all about color when I eat so I like to add little goodies. You don’t have to though!

We like to serve our Swedish Meatball Sauce over one of these 3 Sides:

  • Serve over Egg Noodles
  • Serve over Mashed Potatoes
  • Serve over Rice

As always store your leftover meatballs and sauce in an airtight container. They should keep well for a few days. If you are not going to eat your leftovers within a few days you can always freeze them for one of those busy weeknights in a freezer-safe container.

How to reheat Swedish Meatball Sauce?

There are 3 easy ways to reheat Swedish Meatball Sauce:

  1. Microwave ~Put your Swedish Meatballs and Sauce into a microwavable dish and reheat. Watch for splatters and burning. Since the Swedish meatball sauce has dairy in it, it can burn if left in too long.
  2. Stove top ~ Simply put your leftover Swedish Meatballs and sauce into a pan and reheat on medium. Watch for scorching on the bottom of the pan.
  3. Oven ~ Coming home from work or a busy day out? Put your Swedish Meatballs into an oven-proof dish and cover. Heat at 350 degrees for about half an hour…while you relax.
