Shock and outrage have swept through the UK surfing community after a disturbing incident forced the sudden suspension of a major national competition. Reports claim that during the GB Cup semi-finals in Thurso, Scotland, several female surfers — including one as young as 15 — were subjected to verbal abuse by a group of non-competing surfers. The alleged harassment sparked immediate backlash and prompted an official police investigation.

Arlene Maltman, GB Surfing board member and former British surfing champion, echoed these sentiments. Speaking from Jersey, she described the situation as "deeply disturbing," especially given that the abuse was directed at women during a semi-final heat. "The incident has stolen their chance to shine," she lamented, referring to the three female competitors whose moment of recognition was overshadowed by hostility.
Maltman emphasized that GB Surfing stands firmly against any form of abuse within the sport and reaffirmed its commitment to supporting female athletes. The Channel Islands Surfing Federation and the Jersey Surfboard Club, she added, plan to conduct a full debrief and continue advocating for a safe and inclusive surfing environment.
