The model number is on the upper side—the side with the display. On an iPhone 7 or earlier, an iPad, or an iPod touch, find the model number on the back of your device.

Identifying by Serial Number

You'll need to know your iPad serial number. Once the serial number is known, it's simply a matter of entering that number into a search which results in showing the status of your iPad's service coverage, and a by-product is that the information also tells you your model automatically.

To find the model number, look in the Lightning or USB-C connector. Make sure you're in a place with bright light overhead. You can find the model number on the top side of the connector – the side with the display. On an iPhone 7 or earlier, an iPad or an iPod touch, find the model number on the back of your device.

You can distinguish the iPod touch (3rd generation) from iPod touch (2nd generation) by looking at the back of the device. In the text below the engraving, look for the model number.

The easiest way to determine your iPad model is to go to the Settings app > General > About. You'll see the friendly name (eg, iPad mini 6, iPad Pro (11-inch)) on the line labeled Model Name. This is a recent addition to iOS, so if you don't see this option you may be on an older version of iOS.
