Former Australian Cricket Physio Sues Cricket Australia: Unfair Dismissal Scandal (2025)

A bombshell has just hit the world of Australian cricket: Alex Kountouris, the former head physio who has worked with cricket legends from Shane Warne to Pat Cummins, is suing Cricket Australia for unfair dismissal. This is a story of a long-serving professional, cutbacks, and a potential clash of interests within the sport.

Kountouris, a familiar face in the Australian men's team for over a decade, was let go earlier this year as part of Cricket Australia's cost-cutting measures. He's now taken legal action, filing a wrongful dismissal claim with the Fair Work Commission in Melbourne.

His journey with Australian cricket began in 2003, joining the support staff, and he rose to become the head physio in 2006. Before his time with the Australian team, Kountouris had experience with the Sri Lankan national team in the late 1990s.

In 2015, Kountouris transitioned to become Cricket Australia’s head of sports science and sports medicine. He played a crucial role in managing the workloads of fast bowlers, striving to prevent injuries.

He significantly contributed to the careers of the current generation of Australian pacemen – Test captain Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood. These players have collectively played 247 Tests and taken 1006 Test wickets. He also worked closely with Michael Clarke, who faced various injuries during his career.

But here's where it gets controversial... Kountouris also led the development of concussion protocols in Australian cricket following the tragic death of Phillip Hughes in 2014. He even represented Cricket Australia at a Senate inquiry into head trauma in sport in 2023.

Remember the infamous 'homework affair' in India in 2013? Kountouris advocated for fines rather than suspensions for four players – Shane Watson, Mitchell Johnson, James Pattinson, and Usman Khawaja – who failed to complete team assignments. The team lost the series 4-0.

Following Kountouris's departure, Cricket Australia has advertised for a head of performance. The role involves overseeing sports science, sports medicine, and performance technology across Australian cricket. The position is based in Brisbane and focuses on player support, including performance analysis, athlete management, fitness, injury prevention, rehabilitation, wellbeing strategies, and performance psychology.

The case is now being heard by Fair Work Commission deputy president Richard Clancy, with a phone conference scheduled for next Monday.

What do you think? Do you believe Kountouris was unfairly dismissed? Do you think Cricket Australia's cost-cutting measures were justified? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
