Get ready to be blown away: The GWM Tank 400 Hi4-Z is here, and it’s not just another SUV—it’s a powerhouse that sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in a jaw-dropping 4.3 seconds. But here’s where it gets controversial: With a starting price of $43,500, is this mid-size SUV a game-changer or just another contender in an already crowded market? Let’s dive in.
GWM’s Tank brand has officially kicked off presales for the 2025 Tank 400, offering two variants: the Hi4-T Intelligent Edition at $43,500 and the Hi4-Z Intelligent Edition at $46,300. This update isn’t just a facelift—it’s a comprehensive overhaul focusing on exterior refinements, interior upgrades, and cutting-edge driver-assistance features. And this is the part most people miss: While the Tank 400 retains its rugged, armored aesthetic, it now blends modern elegance with brute strength, making it a head-turner both on and off the road.
Exterior-wise, the front grille has been redesigned with a narrow hexagonal shape, flanked by two horizontal chrome bars and sharp polygonal headlamps. The squared-off front bumper houses high-power LED fog lamps that illuminate up to 31.6 meters, while black trim accents and a far-infrared night vision system add both style and functionality. The side profile stays true to its roots with exposed rivets on the fender flares, though the Hi4-T features retractable side steps, while the Hi4-Z opts for fixed ones. Measuring 4,964 mm long, 1,970 mm wide, and 1,905 mm tall, it’s a commanding presence on the road. The rear retains the iconic externally mounted spare wheel with a quick-release cover and polygonal taillights. Available in Phantom Black, Wing Silver, Nebula Grey, and Dunhuang Purple, there’s a color to match every personality.
Step inside, and you’re greeted by a tech-savvy cabin. A 15.6-inch central touchscreen dominates the dashboard, complemented by a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, HUD, and Coffee OS with Coffee GPT voice interaction. Both variants feature Nappa perforated leather seats with heating, ventilation, and an eight-point massage function for the front seats. Rear passengers aren’t left out—they get a 15.6-inch entertainment screen, a 5.4-litre refrigerator, and manual sunshades. Bold claim alert: This might just be one of the most luxurious mid-size SUVs on the market.
Under the hood, the Hi4-T pairs a 2.0T engine with a single electric motor, delivering 310 kW and 750 N·m of torque. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds and offers a 105 km WLTC electric range with 103 kW fast charging. The Hi4-Z, however, is where things get wild—its 2.0T engine is paired with dual P2/P4 motors, churning out a staggering 635 kW and 1,195 N·m. This beast hits 100 km/h in just 4.3 seconds and boasts a 200 km WLTC electric range with 163 kW fast charging. Both models come equipped with the third-generation Coffee Pilot Ultra system, featuring roof-mounted Hesai ATX LiDAR, side cameras, and advanced city/highway navigation-on-autopilot functions.
Positioned to compete with mid-size plug-in hybrid SUVs like the BYD FCB Bao 5 ($33,700) and Jetour Cross G700 ($46,300), the Tank 400 is already making waves. In September 2025, the Hi4-T variant sold an impressive 2,805 units, proving its appeal. But here’s the question: With its premium pricing and high-performance specs, is the Tank 400 worth the hype, or are there better alternatives out there?
