With many gaming options, such as Xbox, Playstation, Switch, and even our phones, one might wonder if PC gaming is worth it. Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of using a gaming PC as your choice of platform.
PC Gaming Pros
I want to start with the pros because there are many of them. One of the biggest ones is you don’t have to pay for online services like Xbox and Playstation. But, yeah, that is still a thing. Granted, Xbox has a program known as Xbox Game Pass, which includes online play capabilities alongside a bunch of games you can play, but we aren’t here to talk about that.
Quality
Visual quality in games is unmatched when it comes to PC gaming. You can upgrade to the biggest and best components to give you top-tier visuals on the latest AAA titles. Some people may not be all about the visual as much as the story or experience; however, it only furthers the knowledge and the story with top-tier visuals. It is also a testament to how far we have advanced technology.
Mods
Ok, you knew I was going to bring this up – MODS. Games are great, but they can be made even better with mods. Games such as Skyrim, Fallout 4, Grand Theft Auto V, Resident Evil Titles, and much more offer mod support. These mods can consist of a variety of content from expanding on the vanilla game, “unofficial” patches that fix problems that developers haven’t improved and adding new weapons or enemies. There are endless possibilities for what mods can bring to the table.
Multi-Tasking
Now, this is something personal but having the ability to do multiple things while playing a game, such as watching YouTube or listening to Spotify, is a massive advantage to PC gaming.
Back in the day, before I was a PC gamer, I would have to put earbuds under my headset to listen to the game on the TV and music – not anymore! It is so beneficial, especially if you have a dual monitor setup. You can look up guides on the fly, communicate with your friends on Discord, watch the hottest stream going on at the time, anything!
Cons of PC Gaming
Let’s talk about some cons because there are always cons to everything. So while I would say there aren’t many negatives to PC gaming in my eyes, there are cons.
Upgrading Parts
Upgrading components is a critical part of the PC gaming life. For example, let’s say you want better frame rates and quality all in one – a new GPU and CPU may be in order, and once you see the price, you might cry, especially if you are gunning for one of those 4090 GPUs and a Ryzen 7 series.
And if you are going that route, a new PSU is most definitely in order.
Troubleshooting
Ahhh, troubleshooting is myfavoriteaspect of owning a PC– sourcing a problem can be tricky, especially if it is a no-POST issue. It could be any number of things – your GPU, CPU, Memory, Motherboard, SSD, all of the above?! There are more straightforward issues typically resolved in a fresh Windows install, but that isn’t always the case. When it is hardware related, you either have to go to the place of purchase for assistance or reach out to the manufacturer for an RMA (Return Merchandise Authorization) to send your unit in for servicing.
